Good afternoon,

I've seen some old posts on this issue but nothing recent so thought I'd ask again.

I've got a Corniche with twin TAMD 41B's and they are leaking a bit of oil from the crank case breathers. Stange but the stbd engine seems to be worse than the port.

This was highlighted in the survey and the surveyor attributed it to the fact that the corniche sits quite bow high on the plane and therefore the engine tilted quite a bit so is "known to be normal" on these boats but I was wondering whether there was some kind of fix.

It's not massive amounts of oil, but it's bloody annoying the mess it leaves as it works its way down in to the bilge and just in case anyone is wondering there is definitely no piston blow by or anything like that and oil level is showing as about a quarter so not overfilled either.

If i have to live with it then so be it, but I'd prefer not to have oil leaking all over the rear of the engine and gearbox so if anyone knows of a way to solve this that would be great :)

Cheers
D

Not the prettiest of solutions but as the pipe (at least on my KAD42's) go back behind the engines and so out of sight, a 2 litre milk bottle with a bit of oil absorbing / water repellant sheet in it with the pipe stuck in works quite well. Read it here on the forum and did it for myself. Surprisingly very little oil blew out over a season but it only takes a teaspoon or two of oil to make a mess in the bilge. I'm sure there are much more elegant solutions but it's out of sight and works well enough

Ah OK - they have breather filters attached currently and the oil is leaking from around those... So I would use your method above instead of the filters?

I'm not sure about filters and if they are OEM or not. Someone with 41B's would need to confirm. My 42's have no filter on them. The pipe just goes to the back of the engine and dumps whatever out straight into the bilge. Fine if it was a truck I suppose but into a bilge just sucks. You sure you cant solve this with a filter change? I cant imagine them lasting more than a service interval.

Had the same issue on my Corniche, the oil was seeping from the crimped bottom seal on the breather canister.
Now I apply a suitable sealer around the base at the crimped seal.....problem solved

These need replacing every now and then but were frequently left, possibly due to the dafy prices asked for genuine VP items.
However some good aftermarket replacements now available coming in from USA.
Should you lift the engine covers at full chat, you can see an oil mist coming from holes at top of filters. That mist will condense and can leave a film of oil on top of any water in bilge.
Might be worth leaving your engine bay fan on to suck out the vapour.

I had oil around the filters on my 71B's, They were the only filters I hadn't replaced when we bought the boat, they were clogged and the drips were coming from the relief valve on the housing. I replaced them and it was fine after that, not sure if yours are the same or not.
Also took the opportunity to clean the relief valve at the same time.

I replace filters on both engines each year. I had one rubber gasket leak oil because it was distorted probably through
Overtightening. I replaced gasket and now ok. Try to locate precise area of the leak.

Mine is the same as Gery W, the oil seems to be dripping from the seal at the base of the canister so I might try seal that first before taking things apart. I've looked through the paperwork received with the boat and looks like they were new as of april.

I'm guessing the cannisters just unscrew from the crank case?

With open breathers you can use a catch can and this is simply a can with infill material to catch the oil mist and return it to oil, periodically you empty the catch can of its oil and everything is fine.

If your getting oil leaking out the filters they need changing , there is a bypass valve that opens when the filters are blocked but it could be that you have piston blow by that’s causing this . The surveyors quote that it’s the angle of the boat running is fantasy as the system is designed to work . I’ve owned 2 fairlnes same model same engines and neither leaked oil past the filters , if you have oil blowing out you have a serious engine problem.
Have you checked the oil level ?

Take a video of the filter under load and post it or if your on FB there is a Fairline page I am on .

Hi Paul,

Blow by was my first thought but when I’ve taken off the filler cap under load there was no indication of blow by.

Oil isn’t spraying out the filters it seems to be just dripping from the bottom of the base of the filter.

The oil on the dip stick is showing around a quarter.

Will have a look for the Fairline FB page cheers :)
