Hi All. I am looking to buy our first boat, currently considering one with a pair of 192hp 41A's. Both look whistle clean (as is the whole engine compartment) and rust-free, no obvious leaks, sound OK, start fine and run well at idle and WOT. Oil pressure at 2000 rpm plus is around 60 psi on both at c. 90C, however idle pressure on one is 20psi, maybe a touch less, whereas the other is 30. Also, oddly, the intercooler top covers are different, one is a box top whereas the other has a 'two-tube' appearance. I'm thinking that one of them is not the original engine, or is it maybe just the intercooler has been replaced? The hours counters are of no help, they have both been replaced, and there is little engine history; however I believe one turbo is virtually new, and all 12 injectors have just been reconditioned.
My question is, is 20 psi at idle ok for a TAMD41? Generally, what should I be looking out for? I know about the heat exchanger anodes / flushing, potential rusty sump pan, but is there anything else? I know VP parts can be hideously expensive ! Any advice for a newbie is gratefully received...

Yes, thanks for that. We have hired boats with these Volvo engines, so I can fully agree with your smoke observation - especially in a canal lock!
What are the differences a / b?
Also, it has been suggested to me that some parts are common to Volvo commercial vehicle engines, so may be a lot cheaper to replace. Can anyone comment?

The only differences I can find on the web are that the B version has a higher compression ratio, smoked slightly less cold, and there were different power output versions, whereas the A is 192 (200) hp. Also a suggestion that A's have diesel preheaters, but not B's. Can anyone confirm?

I think this might be correct. I had 2 older sunseekers. The oldest one had preheaters the second one did not. Not sure if if it was A or B.

I have the 41p and idle oil pressure of 20psi and 60 to 70psi at wot is normal. If you dont want to pay vp prices then you can get equivalents of different brands for all the filters, impellers and oil.
