I am assuming that like most marine engines the 'base' of this engine is probably that of a truck, am I correct in this?. They used to smoke a bit back in the UK, (I am told this is common), but , as we use road diesel down here I have noticed the smoke becoming less as red is depleted and is replaced by white, am I imagining this or has anyone else noticed this trend?. Finally they always start first time and idle and run beautifully (despite 1500 hours on the clock), could this be because they have a relatively unstressed output of 55bhp per litre?, very low by modern standards I believe

Mine always used to run better on white road diesel (all I could get in the Channel Islands).:)
Back in 1988 the VP warranty stated that it was a requirement to use road quality fuel, not sure if/when they ever amended the warranty wording but from some of the tales you hear I expect the get out clause is still in.

Purely a marine derived engine only.

I was pretty sure that one of the VP UK guys once told me that they were derived from a general commercial block which was used for trucks, pumps and gensets, because he reckoned that they would sit in a field in the back of beyond in a hostile environment running a pump or genset and clock up 100's of thousands of hours before needing a rebuild, so I went digging and found this blog which confirms that there was a light truck version.
