Hi all,
Am I correct in assuming apart from the drive both engines are exactly the same.
Could a gearbox be bolted onto an AD.
Cheers.

There are differences.
e.g. AD41 has a sea water strainer, TAMD41 does not.
Sea water Hoses will be different, engine mounts, turbo, piping around the thermostat for the extra cooling pipes, AD41 has power steering pump etc etc

Also TAMD came in different versions ... TAMD41P is equivalent to AD41P, but there were also de-rated versions for medium duty with lower power outputs.

Pretty sure the important bits ie. number/size//location/postion of bolts physically securing gearbox ( crashbox MS3 / MS5 etc to later hydraulic boxes ) or outdrive on to engine block was the same with all the "40" series engines and perhaps the 4 cylinder "30" as well.
The outdrive uses a short connecting drive shaft from outdrive to engine, the gearbox aka reverse gear has short stubby shaft which goes directly in to damper plate on engine block.
Think that the number of splines on the outdrive jack shaft to damper plate did vary from outdrive to outdrive

Need to check you have correct damper plate (different number of splines) if changing from outdrive to gearbox.
Might be lucky and not have to buy new plate.

Think it’s covered above…but another slight adaption is that there is obviously usually raw water cooling to a reverse gear oil cooler and sometimes shaft cooling pipe work too.

Thanks a lot for the replies. Appreciate it.
Reason I ask is I've got a pair of TAMD41A. An ad41 might be coming up for sale in the boatyard. Was considering it for parts but was wondering if (hopefully never happens) I had a major issue would I be able to just transfer the gearbox do some basic replumbing and drop in the ad41.

Think someone mentioned it earlier, but there are sometimes de rated versions of these series of engines perhaps. Certainly there are for the 61’s and 31’s. Usually a letter after the 41 or 61 etc etc. as far as I know, the “A” versions are the full fat ones.

Get either the engine number and if possible the spec number then you should be able to identify it exactly (contact Volvo) plus if you can find out max revs under load for both units
