TAMD 41

I am thinking of buying a boat with TAMD 41s with 1200hrs. I do not think there has not been any major work done on them. They start easily from cold and make blue smoke on idling. At 3000 no smoke but slight steam mist from exhausts. What is to be expected of engines of this age. Advice please.

Sounds like a bit of oil burning ( blue smoke ), valve seals and or guides.
When it is started from cold the thing to look for is blue smoke which then diminishes once the engine is running .
This is an indicater that oil is seaping down past the seals and guides once the engine is off.

Check for back pressure to see if there is a build up in the engine , with the egine running lift the oil filler cap off to have a look for this ( if blue smoke comes out then rings worn ). Compression test would be needed to asertain more information .

It could even be the wrong oil or to much !!
Check the service records to see whats been done and when , also what comments are logged.
There now a few ideas to start with
