I have recently replaced my instruments with the raymarine st60 range (wind depth speed) after an electrical storm going through the Raz de Sien. Thanks to the insurance company. My problem is that my old but perfectly working autohelm 6000 will not talk to the new instruments anybody know if thier is a cheap way of doing this? thanks in advance

Just replace the control box for the new S1 system. Half the price of the new system is the steering pump, and your existing one should be fine, (although the new S1 motor is a beefier machine than its predeccessor) Sell the old 6000 control box (somebody always wants one and tere you have a much cheaper system able to talk to all the new kit without breaking the bank. Or you could buy a complete S1 sail system inc the pump from me for £1800

possible that the seatalk/nmea interface got damaged in the storm at the same time as the other instruments - worth checking with Raymarine to see if there is any way to check this, - if it was damaged , worth checking with Insurance companyt to add to the claim.

i did the same with an autohelm (which had seatalk) but I can't say i found any particular benefit ... the heading data coming out was useful but not very stable (its not got a sophisticated electronic compass) for input to radar. for hdg data i'd fit a new stabilized raymarine compass which may well have either nmea or seatalk capability ..

If as suggested the autohelm doesn't talk 'Seatalk' then it will accept NMES but you need the Raymarine black box that converts Seatalk to NMES. I have one that works fine with a Navico autohelm that requires this conversion. I think it cost me £110 a couple of years ago

As I said earlier, the linear drive is actually half the cost of the complete system, so sale of the old control box etc may well make up a third of that cost. -- there is somebody after the 6000 control box on the wanted forum after all!

I think that the problem is in the course computer. The new series instruments, ST6001/7001/8001 will work if you have a 150 or 400 or S1/S2/S3 course computer.
They will not work with the 100/300 type course computers.
You may need to change your control unit.

Steve.

Thanks all for your imput i think that i will have to put up with out the interface between the autopilot and the instruments as even with the selling of the old control unit i can't really justify spending the extra cash. The autopilot works fine i just thought that if i could link it with the new instruments cheaply it would be worth it.
