Cruise Reports Taking our yacht to Sweden for the summer - any 50m marinas?

That's incredible.

Google is an amazing thing!

Loved that cat. But not into catamarans for going to sea. Looked closely at that and other designs, but definitely not that boat.

#Love the colours tho. :-)

:-)

Well, that would have made an amazing "new build" thread!!!

Lols. We'll see. It still has some work to do be done, so I'll probably be asking questions for the next wee while...

The main hope was that someone would know if I could park it in Sweden for now.

Looks like Stavanger is the next port of call.... But any thoughts are welcome at this point.

I started with a mirror dinghy @ 11 y old on my own on Conistan Water
5 boats ( 3 rag n stick , with a break for kids ) .
What's your previous boat experience ?
To kinda instruct your designer - builder --- on specifications ??,?,

Hi Portofino,

How to choose a boat! The most subjective question known to time...! For me I spent time on a few boats first; Got to know what (we!) liked. What felt important. Wanted sea-worthy but nice. Sporty. Family proof. And useful.

Spent a lot of time at boat yards too. Boat shows also. Kind of like picking a car - see some that catch your eye. Ask a lot of questions, see some more. Ask more.

Then you begin to ask "how small could be big enough". Started the road by renting on a 39' sail boat. Did a few visits to all sorts, Got invited for a few nights on a 300' power boat, then a 250'. Enrolled in some boat courses. Tried an 70' sail boat, and 50' for 4-5 weeks (each, bareboat).

Talked to some friends, made more. Spent time on a 100' powerboat... then decided (at sea, in a storm) that size and helping people was a higher priority than convenience and port fees...

Then had a look at buying some amazong classic boats. Went to one... got very close with that. Spoke to designers and restoration experts on upkeep etc... then went to new build yards.

Then decided. On one. Hired some people.. and here we are. A boat too big to take to Sweden, but one that feels bloody exciting none the less.

That i need to hear more about....?

Un-tested yet. And I've not seen it myself. It's in Germany at the moment being freighted en route to Norway.

Manufacturers specifications are for 47 knots and she's got enough fuel capacity for 12 hours at full HP consumption.... presume that's light Los.. but we'll find a chance to test it out.

It's a 7m inboard driven RIB.

Key for me was that it could medevac someone from half way across the Tasman to a helicopter coming to meet it (given calm conditions) - "crazy scenarios". It's not at all useful to pull up the beach for a sunset picnic with toes in sand.

sounds interesting...

As someone who has owned a few 7 meter ribs (and bigger) i really would be interested on seeing where the fuel is being held...

As a conservative guess, 47 kts from a 7 meter rib (which is pushing it in anything other than millpond flat) for 12 hours would need something in the region 1400 L of fuel, thats a burn of 2.8 L per mile.

My 9 meter rib with inboard would hit 45 kts flat out with a 260 hp engine but was very light layup and had tanks of around 400L. this gave us a useable range flat out of around 150 miles... (range significantly increased at lower speeds)

Looking at a fairly typical 8 meter rib with a 300 HP new, lean burn outboard, 45 kts would be burning around 100 + Lph, therefore 12 hours minimum 1200 L fuel...

Now of course weight is a significant factor in fuel consumption and speed.... so with 1200L plus of fuel on board you are going to need a monster engine in a 7 meter rib to get it moving close to 47 kts and consumption would be eye watering using conventional technology. thats before we look at the trim and balance with all that weight, let alone sea keeping..

Given the scale of your mother ship clearly money is not an issue so very interested in the novel technology being used for the tender itself.

Hmm.

Your numbers look good. I'll post actual stats when we start testing on our end. No doubt a cube of fuel will slow her way down.

We were sold 47 knots top speed. Fuel for 10-12 hours. Maybe that's at 20 knots. On a mill pond. As suggested..! Seems like we'll be looking forward to putting foils on it, then, to hit those claims.

That'll be interesting.

A boat too big to take to Sweden...

We don´t have 50 m marinas, but we have hundreds of cruise ships coming to Sweden every summer, so no lack of space. Many big yachts are coming as well, but your captain or management company need to book in advance of course...

able to support 200 people for 3-4 weeks at a time, including medical support.
'salright, to start with. We will begin collecting the reservations.
You are aware of the obligation for all new forum members to arrange a complimentary cruise on their boat, are you?!
Welcome to the madhouse!

This is the clunkiest troll on here for some time but top marks for the time you've put into it capital r. Love the crude Microsoft paint picture, and good job keeping the image small so the joints don't show. A common or garden 50m superyacht displaces 400tonnes and while I don't know the exact displacement of "yours", adding 2x her weight in fuel is going to make her sit a bit low in the water so shut all the windows.

Christ, this thread reminds me of some nutjob who posted here about purchasing a 70+ ft Sunseeker and bringing her to Pattaya, Thailand.

I fed the troll for a while, as my GF and I (both Irish) spend our winters in SE Asia (Not Pattaya, mind you!). Over-night, he had a helicopter chartered to pick me up in West of Ireland to bring me to their luxury pad in London City for the weekend etc. etc......

To this day, I still can't figure out the scam (or possibly he was fishing for a mule). Maybe the poor bugger was just looking for attention. He disappeared off the radar. Maybe he was telling the truth and just had too much fun in his London pad one night and never woke up. Who knows?!

I think you may be to quick to judge. There is a banker (who I won't name on this site) who fits the whole profile of the OP.
Whether that is actually him posting of course I can't tell but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt at least for now.

Of course I'm not sure. But I think that if you did have as massive a project as a superyacht it's possible to get a few facts and figures confused. Perhaps his engineers were being optimistic. It is a strange way to troll, is anybody researching this yacht?

Capital_R, while everyone here is a trusting soul, your situation is so far outside of our normal reality that we are beginning to have doubts. Is there anyway that you could prove your story? Something we could independently verify, as a 'millennial geek' I'm sure you'll find this reasonable

What a bunch of suspicious gits. I see no reason to think that we are being trolled.
In fact, I'm already packing up for the largest and longest forum cruise party ever: C_R, just let us know the dates.

Oh, and while you are working on your plans, you might as well consider to cruise for some time the Sicily Strait.
I'm sure that the IT Navy would appreciate the support of a vessel capable to handle 200 migrants stranded at sea! :encouragement:
