Cruise Reports Taking our yacht to Sweden for the summer - any 50m marinas?

.
Best of luck with the zero emissions idea anyhow - even if only at anchor, that's very ambitious for such ship! :encouragement:

A 53' timber boat? I bet she has a lot of soul. :-) Timber is lovley.

I had seen the Planet Solar project - not in person, mind you. Looked at it, and mostly got discouraged that 10 knots, 8 hours per day (island hopping) was not going to be a reality anytime soon...!

We had a (?) 16kva genset back in my youth, that we could run for an hour at breakfast to keep a 1000ah battery pack topped off, even including reading lights, and a mast head and foredeck anchor lamps.... before LEDs.

So it's something to work towards. We'll see. I want that sail-boat experience... and to hear the waves. Should habe got a sail boat? Maybe. Ended up with this, so what's a guy to do?!

Looking forward to coming up to speed on all that is contained in the forums. It's surely more than one mind can hold?!

:-)

Sorry about that. I really thought you were someone pretending to be Robert Bell and was trying to flush you out as an imposter. I was going to contact "you" to warn you about it.

I'm envious of your ship. It looks good now, let alone if all the mods work out. I wish I could afford a "proper ship", although expect i'd need a commercial ticket to be master of it.

I did wonder if you were going to be cruising around the Med picking up refugees for the humanitarian aspect.

All is forgiven. Would be awesome if all the links and use of my real name were reverted to "custard" or some such code word. Maybe it will happen over time... as people drop their guard.

No need to be envious of the ship. I've discovered, in 100% correlation to generally accepted wisdom on the matter, that boats are a void in the water into which tresure is poured....

I have stronger words for that, but this is a public forum.

But that said, this boat was the first one to cross the line in a long list of contenders over the years - and it does feel radically cool to own a ship. Even this one - small and old, and such as it was with the oil downturn, nowhere near £30m or even £3m - which meant the treasure hole didnt start very large.... and appears to be a very mightily fine wee ship.

I love the engines in it. About 3 main engines, and it seems about six 80-280kw generators...

Mad for the money... but hopefully useful too.

... kinda flattered by the concept that someone might somehow bother to impersonate me.... i lead a rather uneventful and simple life... apart from the odd genuine award, or ship...!

Editting my previous posts. (hmm it looks like editting may be impossible beyond a certain time horizon)

Where are you getting the mods done? I'm a total newbie with only a small Rib to my name, so no idea how long such things take. Is the fairing going to be steel? Looks like an awful lot of work to get to your target design (especially if you're going to rip out the internals to make it more pleasure than commercial). I think someone mentioned getting it done in the Pacific, are you going to take her down there to be finished?

We'll see... she's done all that was needed for her next 5 year survey period... surveyors have signed off on the plans. Builders have said they can do it. Just everyone seems to be running behind.... i imagine it will be a fairly utilitarian facility this year... by next year, mostly done, and the year after that, pretty sweet.

Main accommodations are sorted. Next is the exterior profile. Bog and fill the hull to get a nice finish, and teak decks. Basically get it to the azure blue phase. 3* maybe. But nice.

Then next winter take it a level up. Push for the 4/5* finishes. Make it homely.

Little steps. Give people a job, see how close we get, then repeat....

I was lucly enough to spend a bit of time on boats like Itasca in my youth... so know what the end goal is. We'll just see how fast we get there.

:-)

Shhh... I don't want her to hear you saying that, right now that I'm going to replace her for a plastic tub.
Mostly for practicality reasons, mind. But I already know I'll miss her, in many ways... :(

Just pulled this info....

Machinery/propulsion:
Main engine Grenaa 6FR 24 TK
1000 HP with CP propeller
Aft Retract Azimuth Schottel thrusters c/w Deutz
800HP engine
Generators
2 x Volvo
1 x MWM Harbour gen.

Is the latter Gen gas driven?

Gas, as in Gas Turbine?

No, i think thats a mistake. Would be cool if it were. I'm sure, but wouldn't bet a tin of custard on it, that there's neither a 1kw nor a 1mw genset.

There is one 280kva/kw (?) one in the forward engine room. There's also 120kw? and <10kw (maybe <5?) ones near the bridge, and i think 2x ~200kw/kva (sorry.. don't know) and an 80k/w/va in the main engine room....

There's a 40 year old wooden bowman in our immediate family... such a prized treasure.

Thanks :)

No gas driven. I googled "MWM Harbour gen" and it was pointing me to gas driven gensets, any gas from what i read on the MWM website and they sounded very cool from a "Green" pov. I like the ethos with the main engine also, sounds like they built them to run forever and easy to maintain. I remember you mentioning a new compass to work with the nav systems, are they all new too? What did you go with?? Sorry for all the questions, i don't know anyone that owns a ship lol, it's a whole new world of research for me. :encouragement:

I'd say you're one step (or more) ahead of me.

Primary consideration was sea keeping in a bloody nasty storm.

2 was system simplicity amd reliability

They are an American brand so I suspect gas as in gasoline

Noop, i quote what i read..."MWM's product portfolio comprises gas engines and gensets in the output range from 400 kWel to 4,500 kWel. In this way, it is possible to set up power plants with an output of up to 100,000 kWel and more.
The gas engines can be operated with various types of gas, such as natural gas, shale gas, mine gas, biogas, landfill gas, sewage gas, and syngas. They are designed for maximum electrical and thermal efficiency, low operating and service costs, and high reliability and availability. Thus they achieve efficiency of over 90 percent."

Well, that is super interesting.

Ha!!! Imagine if I'd claimed that 200 posts ago!!!

Question...

Anyone got reliable anecdotes to share about when the North Sea settles down into a rhythm?

Seems chaotic and nasty.... according to Windy.tv

Thanks!
