Take your video camera out this weekend

Re: Conspiracy theory....

The hunting ban is a piece of class warfare, as several Labour MPs have admitted. I remember in 1975 or so, Labour MPs cheering and laughing when a special 25% VAT rate was imposed on everything to do with leisure boating, which they, in their ignorance of the number of people with boats like Mirror dinghies and small Hurley sailing cruisers, thought was the province of the rich. It's not acceptable to hate someone because of their skin colour (quite rightly), but totally OK to hate people on left-wing class hatred grounds. Labour MPs' absolute ingnorance of everything outside politics is manifest - I heard one on the radio saying that dogs could be trained to ignore hares but chase rabbits!

Appeasing the anti-hunt lobby will just encourage these nutters to move on to shooting and fishing, and eventually to attacking the eating of meat and keeping pets. Don't think I'm joking here, the animal rights extremists regard keeping pets as a form of slavery. Appeasement never works with Fascist totalitarians, as we found out in the 1930s, it merely whets their appetite.

I was brought up in the country, and live in the country, and to me, hunting, shooting and fishing are a normal part of life, and not just for the upper classes.

About criminals and voting - in the USA, the Democrats are pushing for convicts in prison to be allowed to vote, since they know that the vast bulk of the criminal dregs of society would vote Democrat. The areas of our big cities with the highest density of ex-convicts vote solidly Labour, so I doubt if this lot will change the law here to ban people with criminal records from voting.

haven't we done the hunting thread enough yet......?

No, its just the kind of scuttlebutt chat that goes on in the sailing club or local pub bar between friends. None of the members of any club I know strictly restrict their conversation to sailing - that would be very boring.

The most interesting chats are about the different flavours of the various malt whiskies combined, of course, with tasting. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have no interest whatsoever....

...in the welfare of foxes. There are far more important issues to address.

I'm much more concerned with the hygenic state of our hospitals.

I'll be spending MY time this weekend working towards the improvement thereof.

Around here we are getting over-run with foxes. My wife's car suffered £1400 of damage last month when one ran out from undergrowth into her path. Bits of fox everwhere! That item of vermine didn't suffer as it was all over in seconds. The others that local chicken farmers have engaged professional marksmen to erradicate may not be so lucky.

They took away the gypsies, I didnt care.
They took maway the beggers, I didnt care.
They took away the mentally ill, I didnt care.

Or something like.

The next is fishing. But where will it stop? when we are all sat in our semi suberbia houses staring at a blank screen listening to the words of chairman Blair, sorry President Blair.

The future is so Rosy.

As others have said...
I am rather more concerned with what the spoilsports
will come up with next.
I agree shooting and even fishing are likely, but after that?
Horse riding is high on the list of dangerous sports
So is boxing....
Jet skis?
Power boats?
Both of these are perceived by some as anti social
Some body is bound to lump in sailing boats "just to tidy things up"

Bet that wipes the smile off a few faces!

No. I would not do any of those, but from the days when I did live in the countryside I did alter my views.

I had kept chickens, ducks and geese, something I loved, and the damage from foxes was awful.

Foxes kill for pure pleasure, when you shovel up dozens of chickens who had had their heads ripped of, or the same to a flock of ducks, then you have no illusions about foxes, and do see them as vermin, naure is cruekl, very cruel.

There had been a local shoot who would go out on a sunday afternoon and over the 18 months before we moved there they had shot 108 foxes, and when they did stop the fox population seemed to grow! Eventually all the locals there stopped free range hens.

I had to give up on my livestock, but have no illusions about foxes, and do believe they should be controlled, and shooting and hunting seem the most humane of those.

I learnt many old country skills from people like this, like corn doll making, and carving traditional walking sticks. Traditional rural skills like this are going to disappear if the social environement in which they are fostered are forced to break up.

I'm glad you've picked up on that idea -that just because I'm not affected, doesn't mean I shouldn't be concerned.
You've paraphrased one of the most thought provoking quotes ever made - the origonal by Rev Martin Neimoller was:

First they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me

A good new version by a california constitutional lawyer is:

First they came for the Muslims, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Muslim.

Then they came to detain immigrants indefinitely solely upon the certification of the Attorney General, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't an immigrant.

Then they came to eavesdrop on suspects consulting with their attorneys, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a suspect.

Then they came to prosecute non-citizens before secret military commissions, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a non-citizen.

Then they came to enter homes and offices for unannounced "sneak and peek" searches, and I didn't speak up because I had nothing to hide.

Then they came to reinstate Cointelpro and resume the infiltration and surveillance of domestic religious and political groups, and I didn't speak up because I had stopped participating in any groups.

Then they came for anyone who objected to government policy because it aided the terrorists and gave ammunition to America's enemies, and I didn't speak up because...... I didn't speak up.

Then they came for me....... and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Actually IMHO all whisky tastes like carthorse urine

[/ QUOTE ] I have never tasted carthorse urine so I could not really comment although I have smelt carthorse urine and it did smell strongly of ammonia but I have never found any whisky (or whiskey) that either smelt or tasted of ammonia.

I will bow down to your obviously superior knowledge concerning the taste of carthorse urine.

Go legal hunting

Can I remind you that taking a pack of hounds out to hunt rabbits will still be legal.

And if you wouldn´t mind shooting a few foxes for us on Friday we can enjoy a drag hunt using the corpses.

.......to see how you could help ensure that illegal hunting of wild animals is outlawed.

[/ QUOTE ]

But only by humans of course, the hunting of wild animals by foxes, owls, domestic cats and, in fact, any species other than homo sapiens is still perfectly legal. That makes sense doesn't it.

Spoilsports!! Anti-social!!

What are you talking about?

In none of those other things is the absolute purpose the destruction of a lifeform for God's sake - generally by being torn to pieces.
