I keep looking at Trawler yachts i.e. C-kip, Eurobanker or similar around the late 70's early 1980's mark, however people keep mentioning that the fibreglass wasn't up to standard from the Taiwan builders. Is this just another myth generated by surveyors trying to justify their fees, or is it genuine?

I don't know about these yachts in particular but two years ago I did 2500 m in a Taiwan built Cardinal 47 and I can vouch for it's solidity.
There are many Taiwan built yachts in Hong Kong that are sailed routinely to the Philipinnes and further with no particular problems. On the other hand I once saw one so poorly built that you could poke your finger through the laminate in places. But I think that as a rule Taiwan built boats are not bad.

I crewed, then skippered a CT for a while. Sold in the USA as Tradewinds, I think. Built in Taiwan and came to the UK via Hong Kong.
I was very impressed with everything about her, from the robust build of the fibre glass to the quality of the teak joinery. I helped put in an Eberspacher and it was no joke when we had to go through internal mouldings.

G'day Paul,

Have not seen many problems with the glass lay-up, but the timber or more to the point, the plywood used in some is way below standard: I have seen a few with rotted ply or construction grade ply that has lost it's glue due to moisture.

F'deck and the front of the wheelhouse on trawlers, also the bonding of the wheelhouse to the deck can be very suspect.

However this does not apply to all builders, some if them are very well constructed and will no doubt be with us for many years to come.

Hope this helps.

A visit to www.yachtsurvey.com may help.David Pascoe has posted several articles regarding the "quality" of certain far eastern boat builders.A few minutes spent on the site could make your mind up as regards the layup and quality of fitting out ....../forums/images/icons/frown.gif
