As far as I'm aware all Ipads come with GPS even the non cellular, you do need to download the maps for the area you'll be sailing before you go out of range of wi-fi and/or cellular but you don't need cellular coverage for them to work.

I'd agree with GHA I've used Navionics on android Sony M4Aqua and Motorola defy whilst racing an F18 off shore, very wet and very sunny worked great even in these conditions

Having fact checked myself with the Apple website, my awareness wasn't expansive enough to be accurate and I am indeed wrong.

iPad Wifi model-no GPS. Workaround is an external antenna.
iPad with 3G/Sim is the one to go for IMHO.
Lifeproof do a case that works fine, and has a semi-waterproof charging slot. Stuck on your cockpit bulkhead with "klett power" mega-velcro or similar it will be fine unless the conditions are extreme. Bizarrely, there is no "cover" to the screen...you are actually touching the glass of the iPad itself.
IMHO the power and functionality of something like Navionics is superb. The only downsides are that at night I can't dim the display down enough, and sometimes the app tries to update over 3G. Make sure you have dowloaded the latest charts of the area you are wishing to sail in whilst still on WiFi!

... or turn it up enough by day - I find. I love your ruggedised, always-powered setup though.

I believe you can turn that off. Settings -> Mobile Data -> UK&Holland [or whatever Navionics charting app you're using].

can get an App that runs the screen darker for that problem, I haven't tried it as it was daylight for nearly 24hrs in the archipelago and the French races finish for civilised dinner.
