Tablet confusion

Looking at a Nexus 7 Nexus-7-32GB-Wi-Fi-3G-Unlocked-7in-Black-1-gen

If that '1-gen' means 1st generation, aka '2012' (like mine) I wouldn't buy it for that - a hudl 2 is better. The 2012 version is really too old now - it may struggle with Android 5 aka Lolipop. A 2013 version is good for a year or two.

My understanding from posts here is that most if not all Androids have a GPS chip independant of networks. iPads with wifi+cellular only have GPS on their communication boards, see previous posts here.

Thanks for that explanation, looking at an iPad 8" does the same apply to them as the 10" with regard to only GPS on wifi+cellular models

An update on navionics uk/Holland HD on my nexus 10 with android 5.0 Lollipop.

After a few emails with navionics I got an update through google app store this morning for the app which strangely has the same (4.2.4) issue level as the previous faulty one. THIS TIME IT NOW WORKS PERFECTLY.

I would say that a hudl 2 with navionics UK and Holland (HD) would be a very good navigation setup.

Strathglass is on the market just now (http://appolloduck.net/390766) and have now added that I will include a new hudl 2 and the navionics uk/Holland (HD) app in the eventual buyers name as part of her inventory. It would be impractical to include my nexus tablet as it could not be updated and contains too much of my personal information.

Just in case the thread might stall- no one has mentioned navionics on windows yet. I spent much of yesterday trying to work out how to update my platinum plus cf card. Along the way I downloaded the windows app which is free.just needs yet another set of charts,which would mean one for the iPad, one for the plotter and one for the windows machine.
By the way I have a Sony 21inch touch screen which looks like an ipad on steroids with an internal battery. It would probably lower my waterline by 2cm.

just to let you know sarnia-i've really enjoyed this thread-sad though i am -as i haven't got a tablet but thinking about it-not boring at all for those with an interest in differing views-if i get bored by any postings i simply don't look at them anymore!

Second that pat on the back to all, your comments simple eloquence shows the value of this site to us all, for whatever reason, some may think this thread has been to long for their tastes, others, and I include myself, have enjoyed the contributions made, personally a learning process following a request for help in understanding some of the complexities needed before purchasing a tablet or iPad. I suspect, I will not be the only beneficiary of this font of knowledge.

It's a later version, yes.

If you buy an older/cheaper tablet it will have an older version of Android, which may not ever be updated. Does that matter to you? If so get the newest Nexus that you can afford.

Yes, 4.4 is a later operating system than 4.2

But my nexus 10 has had continuous updates from when I first bought it by google through the android store. It was updated from 4.4.4 to 5.0 Lolipop yesterday.
When I have bought any tablets they have never been at the current operating system level. Soon after the tablet is linked through google to the app store I have always received successive updates which have progressively updated it to the latest level. It is certainly a fact they the google nexus tablets take priority over other tablet manufacturers when it comes to updates.

Yes of course, older tablets logically have earlier systems, and as Strathglass points out his has been continuously updated, what does matter to me, or concerns me, is that I do not suddenly wish to find the Navionics app, my main reason for purchase, no longer works on an older system, is this a possibility, if so your advice to but as new as I can afford makes sense, and is the sort of advice I am seeking.

It's probably more likely not to work on the newer system e.g. after a system upgrade. I'm sure Kitkat (Android 4) will run any current apps.
