Sydney Hobart 24, well underway.

I find it sobering as my son sailed Flying Fish Arctos from Hobart to Sydney and it was a beat the whole way. What a terrible thing for the families.

I am not convinced that taking paying crew on offshore races is a good idea. I suspect that the majority of boats that complete the course will be those that are owner skippered with regular crew.

Quite a few masts gone already. And one favourite retired early due to "engine issues" !
If you have a large yacht, 100', canting keel and powered winches - you need an engine.

Ban engines....smaller yachts, it might be a good idea and become more affordable for a larger section of a very small number of the population.

On many yachts the crew is stiffened by one professional (paid) crew member. Other combinations are permenantly employed crew, sometime more than one who deliver and maintain the yacht.

I'm not sure many would employ the complete crew.

It seems that the first victim named was on his 5th Sydney-Hobart.

I think it's the other way round, you're not paying the crew member to race for you, they're paying you to be on the boat.

Flying Fish is a well known sailing school, so presumably Flying Fish Arctos is one of their boats.

Read the thread, specifically Post 10.

Paid crew - I speak from observing crew practice for Blue Water RORC races in HK.

Of course we were contenders and have the glass ware - so people did want to be crew on our boat :)
