Guys,
the boat yard polished my swim platform teak down to the bare bone and even used some wood oil.. the swim platform on my Fairline Targa 34 is completely ruined and as my boat is now in the water, I can only get it fixed during next winter.
Hence, anyone with a decent solution to put something "synthetic" onto the swim platform for the season, please send me your suggestions. Please spare me any negative comments, I know it is ruined and now I´m just looking for a quick fix for the next 3 months to make it look decent when visiting marinas!
Another thing, I had my boat battery changed, when the electrician left my boat, he dropped the old battery which weighs a lot, and this minor accident caused 2x 1inch cracks in the fiberglass next to the boat deck.. what a start to this season, any ideas for a quick fix on that also welcome..

best regards, mr Yacht

its no problem removing the old teak panel with the boat in the water - you could get a new premade panel supplied or use a synthetic type (flexiteak is good). Stick it down with weights on it overnight - job done.

what do you mean by polished to the bare bone?

+1 insurance claim - for dropped battery damage, annoying but not a difficult repair for a pro.

Is the problem that the teak has now been oiled and you feel it is ruined by the oil or that the teak has been scrubbed away damaging the veneer?

Sorry to hear about your worries, apparently none of them your fault.

Teak can be restored from even bad states - are you sure it is beoynd rescue?

Once back to fresh, the common suggestion, also good by my experience, is to treat it with a two part cleaner followed by regular oilings (regular = a couple of times a season). As coloured oils tend to build and darken over time, my pref is to use coloured oil once and then transparent, uncoloured oil for regular touch-ups.

Wessex chemicals 2 pack to clean and brighten the teak then Teak Wonder to finish. Any good gel coat repairer will fix the ding. Assume the culprit is paying?

Thanks all. Appreciate your help. If anyone knows of someone who keeps ready to cut model layouts (for the lack of a better term) of teak decking Fairline Targa 34 swim platform, please do let me know. Aiming to order a new teak deck/or synthetic..

Cheers, Marc

I believe Wattsons supplied and still supply Fairline as well as most other British builders. (www.wattsons.co.uk)

I have just ordered a teak cockpit for my S28 and they had the template still so you may be in luck. Manufacturing lead time is around 4-6 weeks.

I priced up the teak and synthetic and there was very little in it so went for the real stuff, ignoring some practicalities of the tree saving option!!

How long since you applied the Teak Wonder sealer, and have you always used it?

I ask because I applied it once, and after a while it yellowed where there was little traffic, and wore off where there was more traffic, and looked a complete mess. I removed it and would never use it again.

+1 but I used Semco (Natural) sealer to finish

Thanks guys. Have ordered the Wessex products and also in touch with Wattsons, thanks for the help!

Silly question probably but can I remove old swimplatform teak and install new by myself when boat is in the water? Or do I need to hire a pro and lift out the boat to get it done? Obviously option 1 saves a couple grand ...

You can remove and replace the teak deck in the water easily. Before you remove it make a pattern for the new teak deck and take a picture. The easiest way to remove the old teak is with a router with a wide cutter in it. Set the depth to the thickness of the teak and backing board. drill through it and measure, then set the router slightly less and machine out a hole in the middle of the teak area, If you havent got down to white gel coat increase cutting depth slightly until you do. Then push the router around the teak in biger and bigger circles, machining out the teak. Don't go close to the edges, leave the outer 3" to 4". Brush up the waste frequently and chase out the remaining edges with a wide wood chisel. It will take about 1 to 2 hours to do this.

Fitting the new panel is even easier - sand the gel coat first to make a good key for the glue, spread the approved glue evenly all over the surface with a tile glue spreader and put the teak panel on, carefully aligning it in the recess so you have an even gap all the way aroung for the outer edge sealant, put small pieces of wood or similar on the gap so the panel won't move when you press it down. Then press down in the centre first and work you way out to the edges to get any air out. i.e step on to the middle and shuffle in little steps out to the edges. Put loads of weights (bricks, grow bags, buckets of water etc) on the teak and leave over night to harden. Again it should take about 1 -2 hours. Next day you can put masking tape all around the edges and squirt in the cauling/ sealant/ black gunge. clean of excess and smooth it out, leave over night again and job done.

If you are going to remove it yourself definitely buy one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Andrew-James-Electric-Scraper-Attachments/dp/B004WN52M2
I replace all the teak on my boat recently and it was a god send. The teak on the bathing platform took just a couple of hours to remove using this tool where as a friend with the same boat took two days with a hammer and chisel!!

I used http://www.deckinginspirations.co.uk/ and would highly recommend them. £350 for them to template, supply and fit the bathing platform to give you an idea.
