swearing and honesty

I was just taking a break in work involving tax investigation (bastards)
When I heard a snatch of radio programe....something....Jerry Springer...7,000 swear words! Are there that many? Men only to answer as I appreciate ladies do not swear.

Before the kettle boiled I heard Goalkeeper... let one in....
...did not own up to the ref (who did not see it)..
and this is where we get to the boaty bit-
When racing dinghies we all take a penalty when touching a mark,
do we not?
What does it say for honesty in football compared with other sport.
like sailing?

So the questions are
How many swear words do you know?
How honest are you when sailing?

from what i hear on the streets, there is only one swearword but it is used 7000 times in every sentence.

i always do my turns after hitting a mark as it's a lot less painful than being protested /disqualified later.

Heard the same/similar radio interview on the show last night on the radio and have just booked to go to see it on Saturday night after we've been to the LIBS. I know its on the tv that night as well and hasten to add that I chose it not because of the swearing, but the BBC producer who was justifying it being on the TV pointed out it is the only show to have won the awards from all the critics in its reviews etc. He also claimed that some of the comments about the swearing in some elements of the press were out by a factor of more than 6.

(Actually I tried to book the Comedy Store, but for the second year running, they are sold out for the night we are up to London for the LIBS!!)

Regarding honesty.

There seems to be a scale of honesty in my experience.

Lying about how many blades your prop has in the entry to a friendly race. Not declaring a new (lighter) engine. Did the kite touch the mark? - I don't think so, and we're so far in front/behind....

I try to as honest as poss - have been known to be doing 720's and asked what they were for afterwards...

Having said this, I was protested off the last race of a series in Cowes once (if we'd won we'd have won the week and the class outright.) The protester was naturally enough the boat that stood to win when we were eliminated. No witnesses - then suddenly he produced a witness - his friend in another class who said he saw what happened....

The tendency for people to cheat/not own up/be downright dishonest/commit 'professional fouls' etc. rises in direct proportion to the money in the sport. The exception, in top flight sport seems to be golf. Perhaps it's too difficult to pull off with thousands of people at such close quarters. The range of acceptable behaviour gets wider and always to the detrement of the game and the penalties are never severe enough. In sailing at grass roots level I reckon we are lucky that we are hanging on to a high level of honesty. Long may it be so.

I confess to being a 'doing it to the best of my ability and having fun' participant in sport all my life. Winning is just a bonus if I happen to be good enough.

As to the swear words, I don't have ******* clue!

Did an evening race some years back in a club that doesnt get too stressed about the finer points of the rule book.

Turned out the uptide buoy had been removed some days before so we agreed to each sail to where we thought it used to be.

Didnt make much difference in the results,the usuals won on handicap.I enjoy racing as it gets people out together,but I wouldnt let it spoil a good sail.

When I worked with horses and they ...er... used your foot as a cushion,or tasted some part of your anatomy, I mite have used most swear words know to man and woman and made up a few too. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mind you! I am sitting beside my 16 year old son who is looking up phones on the Internet and I think I mite have just learnt another 2 or 3 new ones. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm always cursing, when it comes to swearing this picture pretty much sums it up for me at sea. I was thinking of renaming my boat "Dinghy magnet" as they always seem to sail as close as they can to me and tack at the last minute nearly catching their mast in my standing rigging grrrr /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I thought this was about swearing and honesty.
For swearing, I find that limiting ones adjectives to just a few spoils the impact of ones words. So, by and large I don't swear. I think. Have to check with Richard on this one.
Honesty-well, it has to suit the circumstance. E.G. 'those are excellent whippings you have done' while I wax-polished the whole of the cockpit and coachroof. Tact is also important. And I can't do whipping as tightly and neatly as he does, anyway.
'Sex is only discussed by those who don't indulge' was a statement on a recent post so I suppose my only response to this statement is 'I couldn't possibly comment'.
