Hi Everyone

just giving heads up on some planned refurbishment work at Swansea Marina over the coming weeks.

This is the marina lock not the Tawe lock.

As part of Swansea Council’s ongoing commitment to re-investing in its Marina facility, a total refurbishment of the Marina Lock inner gates has recently been authorised.

The project will involve the removal, refurbishment and re-installation of the gates. The cost to carry out the work will be in excess of £750,000. To put this in perspective this figure is comparable to the Marina’s berthing fee revenue for a whole financial year.

This project is vital in order to ensure the longevity of the Marina Lock for many years to come and to maintain the current level of tidal access that Marina customers currently enjoy. If we do not carry out these works then there is a risk of inner gate failure which could lead to Marina Lock closures around both HW and LW on spring tides.

Due to the scale of the project, it will be necessary to adopt a phased approach. The initial preparatory works are already underway and will complete in the next few days. Unfortunately some of the phases will involve closing the lock to traffic for a time. Details of the project phases are as follows:

Phase 1 – Underwater Concrete Pour to Inner Sill

This phase will commence on Monday 7thMarch 2022 and is expected to last for up to 4 days. The Marina Lock will be closed to traffic during this phase.
The purpose of this phase is to remove a step from the inner lock gate sill to provide a suitable surface for the bottom stop log to seal against.

Phase 2 – Inner Gate Disassembly and Removal

This phase will commence on Monday 14thMarch 2022 and is expected to last for up to 24 days. The Marina Lock will be closed to traffic during this phase.
Stop Logs will be installed, the lock chamber will be de-watered and the gates will be dismantled and removed. Once the disassembly and removal process has been completed then the stop logs will be removed and the lock will once again become navigable.

Phase 3 – Inner Gate Refurbishment

Refurbishment will commence after Phase 2 has completed. The Marina Lock will not need to be closed to traffic during this phase. The gate components will be transported to workshops off site for shot blasting, repairs and re-coating.

Phase 4 – Inner Gate Re-Installation

The date and duration of this phase is to be confirmed. The Marina Lock will need to be closed to traffic during this phase.
Stop Logs will be installed, the lock chamber will be de-watered and the gates will be assembled and re-mounted on their pivots. Once the gates have passed commissioning tests, the stop logs will be removed and the lock will be returned to service.

Swansea Council fully understands that the last couple of years have been challenging for boaters and the boating industry alike with the restrictions on life brought about by the COVID-19 situation. Every effort will be made to minimise the length of time that the works take and we will endeavour to avoid peak periods such as Easter, school holidays etc.
