Swansea, info wanted pls

We are aiming to visit Swansea Marina during our week off, next week.
Any "must do" tips re pilotage or things to do and places to go?
Or things not to do and places to avoid? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We were there for a few days in June - nothing too tricky on the pilotage, beyond the 'Nash Passage, or not?' question (see previous thread)

I guess the locals can advise on the best places to eat and provision, but we went to the Pump House and the Chinese by the marina (both ok), plus the Italian (v good). Lots of people recommended the restaurant by Towy lock, but it was shut for refurbishment while we were there.

Things to do? To be honest we just popped out every day and anchored off one of the bays along the southern edge of the Gower, again the locals can probably give better advise on this. There's also a cinema behind the waterfront museum - always handy for the Great British Weather!

Would we go again? Definitely!

The pump house ...NOOOOOOOOOOO

Italian is great
for variety walk past Dylan Thomas building by pump house and carry on through past the newspaper building to 'Wind street' (pronounced as wot you do with a windlass NOt like a strong breeze)... lots of restaurants there. Can fully recommend the Spanish one at the bottom on the right(cant remember the name) and the 'no sign wine bar'
Can take tender to sainsburys upriver or walk to Tescos.
Also try the monster breakfast from the cafe by the statue of captain cat (by the swing bridge over the marina)

You will be very welcome in the Swansea Yacht & Sub Aqua Club for a meals and drinks.

Pilotage is fairly straight forward, if arriving at low tides, might be good to stick to the dredged channel. Once you enter the breakwaters, radio up Tawe Lock on Ch 18. Just report 'entering the river'. That will get you booked on the incoming list. Only a probelm at w/e's when the incoming traffic is large.

Otherwise the town is tatty and dirty at the moment. Much building going on. The waterfront around the marina is pleasant, also worth a walk around the other sode of the river, where there are some new developments.

Next week is looking much better weather, if the seas are calm and winds light, a couple of days on the Gower are good. Oxwich, Three Cliff's and Pwlldu are good anchor stops.

Thursday night is sailors night at the SYSAC, so will be plenty of like minded sailors there.

Havn't been there by sea so no learned advice on that. If you like curries try the Anarkali on the same road as the Brangwyn Hall (10 mins walk) or Miah in the chapel opposite. Joe's Ice Cream Parlour (same street) is a must for afficionados..
You will probably get this too late as we have just returned from our first summer cruise. Got as far as Ilfracombe but the weather stifled some of our plans. Sorry about the weather by the way, its my fault for deciding to buy a boat this year!

Gallini's (The Italian) overlooks phase 1 and is well worth a visit. As Tico said, Wind Street has lots of choice but is probably best avoided at weekends. If you cross the new footbridge between the Marina and Sainsbury's there's a very good restaurant/grill slightly to the right as you come off the bridge. Someone mentioned Anarkali's for Indian and there aren't many better - it's a taxi ride though - and the Yacht club is good for a beer and reasonably priced no-nonsense food. Definitely not the Pump House.
