Swallows and Amazons

Probably because the were rather talentless and priggish. It was a bit like watching a school-play at prep-school.

My hope is that they will avoid that this time around.

BTW Antarctic Pilot. Dick wasn't in S&A. And as for Missee Lee? :)

Were they "professional" before the film? I was an "actor" at the age of 6 months, and I got paid. Does that make me a professional? :)
If you got paid I suppose it does.

Quite what the Harry Potter cast did before they went into films I don't know. But I'm sure they'd been coached long before they were first filmed. Even then the first Harry Potter isn't a dazzling display of acting brilliance. I'm sure the later ones are better, but I've not seen them.

In which case they played the charactors exactly as written.
Which they must avoid this time. The film will be a flop.
It may have been written of it's time, but that is no reason to alienate modern audiences.

I don't see that using talentless actors follows the writing of the books, which were well written. It's like having Katy Price and Peter André doing The Taming of the Shrew.

hi all, i'm now 58, was born in uk and lived there till 1966, I distinctly remember watching swallows and amazons on the BBC at 5-30 (tuesdays i think) as it was after Blue Peter,( with hosts Chris Singleton & Val). I bought the 1974 movie and it is the tv episodes rolled into one. I loved Arthur Ransome's stories, still have couple of his books. They dont rate in the kids libraries these days. sad !!

I'll second Jenny Agutter to play the mum

just googled it and found this
http://screenterrier.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/swallows-and-amazons-starts-casting.html

I notice an application from someone whose name does not seem to be of UK origin - wonder how they will broach that one.
Can't see a problem.
The characters in the book are very well-established as Caucasian, upper-middle class so why would they want to introduce an asian or black actor?

Although, of course the Altounyan family that the characters were based on were Armenian, but the ethnicity of the area was very diverse.

Aahh!
You learn something new every day.
Thanks

There's a small handful of such exceptions, though the only other one I can remember is for waiters in ethnic restaurants. That's always seemed a bit more dodgy to me, no reason a white guy can't serve curry just as well as a Bangladeshi, but hey ho.

Pete

I think 'Poppit' might be more in keeping

On the selection criteria issue, I know you can advertise for females to do jobs aimed at encouraging women into sport for example.

I thought the line up was John Noakes, Peter Purves and the lovely Valerie Singleton - another one to break my heart when I learned she had jumped on Mary's bus.
