So picked up an engine has amazing spark and compression but won’t fire just pops every now and then with some exhaust smoke. Cleaned carb was a bit gunky it’s like it wants to go but doesn’t quite make it any suggestions.

Is the petrol new ? Tbh I think you may get more advice on the practical boat owner forum ,there are a few outboard experts on there.Good Luck

Timing? Check the woodruff key hasn't broke and the rotor moved.
