My Suzuki outboard is now 3 years old. It's had light / moderate use, powering my tender. I'm disappointed with the reliability. I recently replacd the ignition coil and fuel cap at a cost of about £50, which seemed high for a £300 outboard. The first time I dismantled the motor to clean out the carb I had to drill out a number of st. stl screws where these had welded themselves into aluminium - a problem that Suzuki should have prevented by selecting better quality materials or assembly techniques. Cleaning the carb is becoming a regular task, every other month. I think this could partly be due to the absence of an in line fuel filter, but I'm wondering if I'm getting some kind of reaction in the carb float chamber (as this is becoming pitted inside) which is producing deposits that block the needle valve.

Has anyone else suffered similar problems and found a solution?

we have a mariner 2.2 and the same sort of things are happening in the way of corrosion, i assumed the corrosion in the fuel bowl was due to the poor quality of metal used and the occasional water that gets in.
I have to say that in the four years i have had the engine i have changed most of the rusty steel bolts for stainless ones as used in the yamaha outboards coating them in the great new 3in1 white lithium spray grease.

What do you use for fuel? My Suzuki 2.2 has been going for over ten years and I've never touched the carb, though I had to clean out the water passages this year. It's had rough & ready use, originally for getting to our mooring, and now only occasionally, mostly to avoid paying water-taxis. The only problem we usually get is when I try to use old fuel, when the plug gets knackered.

Do you switch off the fuel and run the carb dry until engine stops after every use? With a 2 stroke if you dont the residue left behind as the fuel in the carb evaporates away can cause blockages.

I'll try switching off the fuel supply and using up the fuel in the carb bowl as I don't do this at the moment, so perhaps that's the problem. Maybe I've had some bad fuel, but it never hangs about for long and I'm carefull with the oil mix. All of the bolts are st. stl into aluminium, so whenever I've removed these they've been reassembled with chromate compound. I don't know why Suzuki didn't do that in the first place!

am surprised, mine is about the same age, its been upside down in the oggin, all i did was empty a big can of wd 40 into every orifice and it goes on and on and on, occassionally i get a whiskered plug, hey ho, my mixing of the oil isnt that good.
the corrosion in the carb can only come from contaminated fuel, suggest you look at what you are doing that is allowing water into the fuel system, by the way i turn the fuel off on the last run ashore to empty the carb, it is then chucked in the boot and lies there till the next time i use it. it then starts 2nd pull when i put it on the ding.
