Hi there,
I have never owned a boat, but have recently been looking at a model from a few different dealers. A simple 'sloop' boat for the Amsterdam canals.

The model of the boat can be seen here: http://www.jachthavenachterbos.nl/detail.php?id=49

I have approached 2 different dealers.

One is willing to sell me the boat, with the Suzuki 5hp Engine........

The other told me that it would not be possible to use the 5hp engine with the remote steering wheel without spending a small fortune on a conversion kit of sorts......and that for the cost of the kit i would be as well upgrading to the 8hp Engine.

Does anyone have any experience with this and can help?

many thanks,
neil

Given the small difference between the 5 & 8hp in cost he may well be right.

You can use the 5HP with a steering wheel, but it could be that there isn't a "proper kit" for it - so by the time you've paid someone to make up the bits, it may well be cheaper / just the same to go for the 8...

My dad had a 6hp and had to make up the gear to fit to his existing steering himself.

I've just fitted the remote kit to a Tohatsu 5hp (different motor I know, but kits are available for all manufacturers)
The kit of parts span a price range of about £130 to £200 for this motor.
Then you need a steering box and cables and a remote control box (for throttle and gears). Probably another £200 to £300.

But you will still need all these for an 8hp.
