I know its been covered here many times, and all the info tells you that it its a big job and involves taking half the engine apart. I also know its a bad engine 'cos I have one!

But changing the the impeller is easy. So if you have one of these things and its only blowing hot steam from the piddle hole don't worry, its a simple job.

The inpellers are cheap and reasonably easy to get hold of.

Put the engine on suitable bracket and tilt it up as far as it will go, you should now have good access to the bottom of the shaft. Look under the shaft, above the prop' and you should see 2 x 12mm bolts, undo these and place in a box (you'll need these to put it back together again).

After you've drawn the bolts, locate the rubber plug half way up the shaft and remove it. Loosen the nut holding the gear shift bars, but don't remove the clamp as its a bit of a bugger to re-locate insitu. The clamp nut has been known to sheer off, so don't be supprised if it does. Then ease the whole assembly (gearbox and prop) off the shaft.

On the top of the gearbox you'll see 4 nuts & washers, remove these (put them safe) and ease the impeller cover off. Take care not to loose the half-moon key on the shaft!

Make a note of the direction the impeller is turning, clean up the area and fit the new impeller.

Re-assemble in reverse order. Make sure the gear shift bars are linned up and the shift works, you may have to play about a bit to make sure it goes from ahead to astern nice and easy before nipping up the nut.

Thats it folks, its as easy as that.

PS

Take the opportunity to do a complete service at this time as well, its worth it. My engine is working again now after many months of frustration and anger. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Blimey Aberman ....are you still wrestling with your Suzuki? After what you were calling it and the local engineers, when you were at the dinghy quay in Mahon, I would have thought it would be at the bottom of the Oggin by now! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Anyway, glad to know you two are reconciled. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well when needs must, you have to get on!

We did for the kids you know?........................To stop them from having to row everywhere - they were getting deformed neck, shoulder and back mussles /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

But I must admit it came very close to a float test on a number of occasions. As for the local Suzuki dealers, the least said the better /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif.

Thanks for the reassuring post Aberman
Im going to tackle mine when I get back to the boat in May. Do you know of an online source for the impeller ? - I dont want to rely on Dubrovnik to find one !
Im not too concerned now about replacing the impeller - My biggest worry is that when my DF6 stopped pumping water last season I didnt spot it until a BIG overheat sufficient to blister the paint under the engine and when it had finally cooled down there was a little oil dripping out the water drain hole in the skeg. Sounds to me like an oil seal has also gone so I think Ive got a little more than an impeller change on my hands. (What a *ugger - The engine is only 10 hours old)

I'd try these http://www.yellowpenguin.co.uk/ I spoke to them to get the part numbers of the impeller and some other bits I wanted. They were very helpfull, I think they will do mail order/telphone orders, thier prices were pretty good as well.

When I bought my engine the paint blistered very early on, and there seemed to be a lot of steam as well. But after the the 10 hour run in time it all settled down. Check the oil levels for the engine, and don't forget to change trhe gear oil as well.

Good luck with it! I'd still rather a yamaha.

[/ QUOTE ]Yes, terrible disappointment. I will never buy another Suzuki product as long as I live.
