Hi,

I was wonder whether I should change the water pump impeller on my Suzuki outboard.

The outboard is 6 years old and it's the original impeller, but still seems to pump OK, i.e. no overheating problems as yet.

I'm concerned about taking the SS bolts out of the Aluminium casting, which are more than likely seized solid (I haven't tried yet).

Is it better to leave well alone or replace the impeller?

Has anyone replaced the impeller on a Suzuki DF2.5, and if so was it easy?
 
pour boiling water over the casing then try to undo em, but I'd change it now its better to have it ready for next year
 
Try the trick of tightening the bolts a little first, then back and forwards, increasing the arc of the spanner gradually. Warming is good but a torch might have to be your final trump card, but you'll have to repaint afterwards.

The impeller will have to be replaced eventually, so why not now? The longer you leave it the more stubborn will be the bolts........

With a new DF2.5 myself, I'd be happy for you to be the guinea pig :)
 
Just in the process of changing my 14 years old 8 hp Yamaha impeller, along with its cam belt. Unlike jabsco of a similar age there was little deterioration. Likewise a 8 year old 5hp towo stroke one done in the early 90s. In both instances absolutely no probs with bolts etc. However we have always fresh water rinsed or run after a seawater cruise.

So if it has not done 1000s of hours, just carry it as a spare, incase it does drop in output later on.
 
Seized bolts don't get better by leaving them alone!
I tend to buy 2nd hand ob's, the first thing I do is remove ss bolts, clean and apply waterproof grease.

Hi i have replaced around five impellers on Suzuki 2.5hp outboards around the same year as yours. I haven't yet had one bolt seize on me.
 
Just doing this job right now on my own Suzi 2.5 outboard. I’m surprised the impeller still works. Don’t put the job off till it fails completely. As said steep bottom of shaft in boiling water, try tightening first the bolts and if the they start to turn plenty of light oil, WD 40 3in1 etc. Once off the impeller can be done in minutes. You could change the gear oil behind the prop while you have the shaft out. Good luck and no swearing.
 
Yes, I plan a complete service, engine and gear oil, new plug, new impeller if I can, check the shear pin, a good clean up, touch up the paint and grease things. I've got all the bits, I just need to get on and do it, but it's -4 deg C outside and not much warmer in the garage, I hope it'll be a bit warmer over the weekend!
 
IMHO opinion it is those SS bolts in ali that will be the undoing (death) of the o/b. As said have a go at each bolt carefully. If you can get them out refit with lots of grease duralac or whatever. if you snap off a bolt then hopefully you can still use the engine. Until you either throw it away or get the stump out.
Don't worry about the actual impeller or anything else compared to those bolts they will be no problem. good luck olewill
 
Update on servicing the Suzuki Df 2.5

I finally got around to servicing the Suzuki DF2.5.

All the bolts came out without a problem, the old Impeller was in good condition, despite being 6 years old, but I put the new one in anyway, I'll keep the old one as a spare.

One surprise was the amount of water in the oil in the lower gearbox, I phoned a friendly Outboard Mechanic and he was reassuring, apparently the older DF2.5's are prone to this He advised that should I disassemble the unit and cleaned the accumulation of weed off the prop shaft, between the prop and the housing and then reassemble the unit.

When I looked closely, there was a lot of very thin strands of weed packed up close to the shaft seal. I cleaned it all off and had a good look at the two shaft seals, they seem to be OK, no visible nicks or tears. So I've reassembled the unit and I'll check the oil in the gearbox after a few hours running.

The whole process was a lot easier (for a change) than I thought it would be.
