Suzuki DF 50 starting problem when cold/freezing.

Our local outboard man is on lockdown. My knowledge of fuel injection is limited to Bosch systems from the '70s.

The engine is a fuel injected 3 cylinder and normally very well mannered. There is a label on the controls telling one to push the key in if 'choke' is needed.

So...around about freezing...turn the key and it starts immediately but dies within 5 seconds or so. Hold the key in and it may last up to ten seconds or so before stopping.

Do this 15-20 times and it starts to run and all is OK for the rest of the day.

So I assume there is a temp sender or the equivalent that may not be doing its job??? Sounds like I might need to check connections etc...but where should I be looking???

Any help much appreciated

ITYWF that there is a cylinder temperature sensor and an inlet air temperature sensor
You might begin by checking the connections on these ( Lg/ W wire and Lg/B wire)

( There is also an exhaust manifold temperature sensor)

You will find a Service Manual at SUZUKI DF 40 SERVICE MANUAL Pdf Download | ManualsLib which should contain all the information you need to troubleshoot

and supplement SUZUKI DF 40 SUPPLEMENTAL SERVICE MANUAL Pdf Download | ManualsLib

I'm not sure if you can get it on FI engines but could it possibly be "Carb Icing"?

Obviously once things warm up on each run it stops the icing as the residual heat keeps the throttle body warm.
You only get carb icing on engines with carbs.

Having pondered I have to assume the choke (or rich starting mixture mode) is turning itself off after a couple of seconds.

That's a good possibility, possibly due to a faulty temp sensor. Best bet is to get someone with the requisite diagnostic kit to identify the issue. Short of spotting a loose wire, it's difficult to fault find on electronic engine systems without the diagnostic kit.

Which is what's I'd do if they weren't on lockdown.

I realise that from post #1, but it doesn't change the facts.

Your local man isn't required to be on lockdown, he must have chosen to do so. Is there not someone else, within a reasonable distance, who is still working ?
