Suzuki 4 stroke or Mariner 2 stroke?

My outboard has to travel back and forward, with the inflatable and gear in the car boot. Two strokes don't care how they are laid down, whereas four strokes, with lube oil in their sumps, are very fussy, and have to be laid down on one particular side. This may influence your choice. Two stroke for me.

I dont want to get to the 4 or 2 stroke debate; the Suzuki 4 stroke have a good reputation. Why limit yourself to Suzuki; the Mariner 4 stroke (which is a Tohatsu engine with the Mariner logo) are heavier than the Suzuki but more robust.

For small 2 to 3.5 hp dinghy o/bs 2-stroke wins hands down. Any bigger (ie lives on the transom and not put on and off regularly) 4-stroke much better.

having had both a Mariner 4hp 2 stroke and now a Honda 2.3hp 4 stroke, I vote 4 stroke - it's a pain having to mix the petrol and oil - and once you've done it, it's a pain if you don't use it quickly enough. Petrol goes off as it gets old and blocks the tiny jets in small OB carbs. When I had the 2 stroke, I would mix up a gallon of petrol with 2S oil and then be worrying if I was not using it quickly enough. With the 4 stroke, I keep a gallon of unleaded in the cockpit locker and if I haven't used it within a month, I put it in the car and fill up with fresh juice.

If you had to choose between the two, which one would you go for, and why?

So many factors and variables here. If you want new, it has to be four stroke (unless you go Chinese "unofficial" import).

Mariner 2 stroke will be at least 6 years old now, given that last new ones were 2007. You could find a good one, but prices are getting ridiculous for these outboards now as they are seemingly so sought after.

As someone has said, Suzuki is light-ish and has a reasonably reputation. If I were buying a new small four stroke, I think Suzuki 2.5hp would be a good option

what are we calling ridiculous? I've been thinking of selling and getting a 4 stroke and if I could get halfway there by selling off the 2 stroke it would be a no brainer :)

Ridiculous prices old small knackered two strokes are fetching at the moment on places like fleabay - but hey its a free market - and I guess the old demand curve is pushes prices up. I just wouldn't personally pay those prices for old two strokes - but good luck to the sellers who are finding those willing buyers.

Mine's not even knackered, it runs beautifully. The main reason for swapping is for the peace and quiet of a 4 stroke. I'll take a look on ebay and see what it's worth :)
