It was well reported at the time - my recolletion is that they were sailing fast downwind, faster than the waves, and that for some reason she buried her nose in the next wave rather than riding over it, which somewhat had the effect of slapping the brakes on.
She's called Silk II if you want to do a web search.
I've had the picture hanging above the loo for about 5 years
Ill never forget that evening. We'd finished racing and were making our way back to Cowes.
Albertina and myself were in the focsle preparing for a run ashore when the forehatch shut with a bang. Ally lost her marbles, but I calmed her by hanging onto her nuts. It was touch and go for a while. As we came upright, Ally remarked on my calm demeanour and it was then that I snapped.
Poor girl, last I heard she accused me of being a control freak, which I'm not. She's busy at the Chelsea flower show this week and given up sailing. Pity.
Pretty sure that it's "Silk II" and the picture was taken by Beken of Cowes.
The foredeck hand went down about 3m before resurfacing. From what I can remember of the reports the boat did suffer minor damage, but was ready to race again the next day. Not sure if there wasn't a broken arm on board though.
Soren Jensen was steering it. He was amazed that they never even blew the kite out. The foredeck guy did crack some ribs and they bent some stanchions.
