I have just read some previous threads reference surveyors in the Norfolk/Suffolk area, I have made some notes on possibles. My first question is, all of these seem to be reccomended for sail type boats, so would any resonable surveyor be able to survey mobo,s as well..?

Is their a governing body that controls marine surveyors?

What is a reasonable cost for a 33ft x 11ft beam mobo approximately.

How long would you expect a survey on a boat this size to take.?

Liftout etc will be arranged by the boatyard.
Thanks for any help you can offer /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thee are two surveys you need to consider.
The most common is a structural and equiptment survey. With this the surveyor will (or should) check the hull inside and out for cracks, take moisture readings, scrape away any antifoul to check for blisters, comment on the genral condition, check major fittings such as fuel tank and water tank, check basic electrical system and assertain that the basic equiptment (nav lights, winches etc etc) all work.
He will then make a list of obervations (things he's noted and reccomendations (things that should be fixed/done).
Any surveyor should be able to do this, raggie or otherwise.

The second survey (can be done together) is a mechanical survey which goes deep into the conditions of your engines/gearboxes/drives - can involve oils analysis and is quite specifc. If this is required, it would need someone familiar with Mobo engines and running gear.

Hi

I am not aware of any of the local surveyors that will do both structural and mechanical. For engines you can talk to Brundall Bay Marine Serivces (part of Broom and pretty thorough).

For strutural survey try Steve Truss at Insight Marine Surveys, Gary Holmes at Cinque Port or John at European Marine Surveys.

These are mainly Norfolk based but would travel south of the border into Suffolk. Looking at around £12 per foot for structural and maybe £250 for the engine tests on a twin engined boat.

Regards

Will

Had close to this a fortnight ago. I instructed a surveyor from the Thames and, with travel costs, paid around £350 for 9.75m x 3.3m. Said surveyor made diary time because I know him. Norfolk surveyors were all very busy, apparently there is a big backlog of BSS exams. I had a basic mechanical survey as part of the job, not full oil analysis as there was no guide on when the oil was last changed or hours run since and advice suggested that this made oil analysis less useful and more likely to give a false panic attack. Mech survey checked engines for oil/fuel/water leaks, starting and running performance, smoke, water flow, appearance/state of oil (he tasted it IIRC), gearbox condition inc oil level, leaks, oil state and so forth.

Cheers Andrew

As you say I have also heard that the locals are up to their necks in work, so I may have to import an outsider. Many thanks for info on oil as I may also be in a similar situation.
