Looking at a boat in Holland and need to find a surveyor as well as what to look for?

The boat is a Princess 470 with Volvo TAMD72A engines

Any advise is appreciated

Nice to be back on the forum

There is a blast from the past.
On the boat hunt again - the disease gets us all eventually.

Would it not be more sensible to fly/drive/ship a trusted UK surveyor out there rather than relying on local talent who may or may not be a drinking buddy of the broker?

Give Johan Schoppert a call on 0031 653 298 981
He runs a survey business and is well known as an all round reliable chap.
Mention my name to him as he knows us well.
Mike.

Do not accept any assurances about paperwork and always insist on seeing 'in the flesh' all the documents you expect to be handed over with the boat before you complete the purchase. By coincidence I once bought a Princess 470, albeit with Cat 3208 engines, in Germany which I brought back to the UK. Lovely boat which feels much bigger inside than the length suggests. Is this one a lower dinette or 3 cabin version?

The only fault I can remember about our P470 were the windows which was an endemic Princess problem from that era. Princess fitted stainless steel covers to the aluminium frames and the resulting mix of steel, aluminium and salt water caused a chemical reaction resulting in a telltale white powder at the base of the frames. The fix isn't cheap http://princessownersclub.com/fixing-older-leaking-windows/ On my boat we also had another issue in that the aft crew cabin floor was very close to the bilge level so the carpet in that cabin was always sodden making it almost unusable as a sleeping cabin

Otherwise ours performed faultlessly. Good head sea boat too albeit the hull throws a bit of spray around

If you draw a blank on a local surveyor I can recommend Jim Pritchard

TAMD 72a one of the worst engine ever to come out of Sweden , far too overstretched , smoke like an old sabre at start up, piston failure issues, in ehad to re engine boats before when owners have just given up with the bills.
It was on its limit at 380 then they breathe on it more with a bigger turbo and don't improve the cooling.

Looking at a P420 in EBY with a D6 370 is that better?

Tom

So the windows is that the case on a P 420 1996 also?
I'm not an expert! Its possible but its also possible that a previous owner has already dealt with the problem on either boat. Any half decent surveyor will pick it up immediately
