good survey done with pretty pics...ok..
on closer inspection the surveyor has had to scratch deep into hull to inspect. thats ok. i expected that. but what about the small " holes he has left in my gelcoat.
what can i do about that or can it be just left ?

Did you comission the survey? If so what did you ask him to do? Personally I would not expect a Surveyor to do anything to my boat which altered its condition without prior specific agreement both on what he would do, and how it would be remedied.

I would say (without knowing what you agreed he could or could not do) that if he has done anything that has materially altered the state of the boat, without your permission and agreement, that he should make it good again. After all, if you let a boatbuilder loose to do a repair, you expect him to finish the job off properly.

However check the small print of his terms - bet theres a disclaimer! But he knows what he did, so you should ask him whether these 'holes' matter and need repairing.

Hmmm. Holes? Cant imagine what a surveyor would do that would generate holes in sound gelcoat. Sure that his scraping back of the antifoul hasnt opened up blisters? In which case I would have thought he had done what he was paid to do ie establish the state of the laminate.

I think you also have to take the view that if you want the info then you have to accept the investigation. So the question becomes one of "was the technique appropriate given the investigation requested?" You cant have moisture readings without preparation of the surface.

More detail required really.

Its unlikely he has scraped off the gelcoat but may have scraped through protective layers of epoxy to inspect the gelcoat.

I would phone the surveyor for advise ,theres usually something in any report that needs a bit of discussion any way.

i imagine 'small' holes in the gelcoat were caused by the points of a damp meter. when inspecting the bottom you would expect the surveyor to scrape off patches of a/f for testing but he would normally put a dab of fresh paint on afterwards to make good.

I don't know about the rights and wrongs of what the surveyor has done but, if they are holes (rather than superficial surface damage), FWIW I would mix up a little bit of Araldite and bung that in. That'll solve it.

Why has he dug deep holes as you put it ? Scrape through anti-foul ok ..... but holes ??

As a surveyor myself - when inspecting - I would touch up areas I had scraped with a small pot of anti-foul unless boat had another system. Then damage would be subject to clients agreement.

I would not accept a surveyor who digs holes and then leaves it with client asking questions ...... a survey is supposed to be NDT based ..... N(on) D(estructive) T(esting) .......

Go back and ask him why / what he will do about it ......
