Re: Marvellous!

Am new to this forum, and find that the first post I make is to a thread with a "discussion" going on - I never learn :-)

Have been reading PBO (and less so YM) on and off since I was a kid (in the early 70's), my rose tinted spectacles tell me that the magazine used to be aimed at those who used their boats rather than more aimed at those looking to buy a boat (or anything else).

However, IMHO, it seems that in the last couple of years that PBO has moved back towards the boat user (although not perhaps as much as I would like), although it seems to me that 30 foot is nowadays “small” - but I guess it's a matter of compromise - after all I do appreciate that PBO are not writing the magazine solely for me!

I still occasionally buy YM, but I do recall getting quite angry at my waste of money (last year?) when the second hand test of 3 boats were for vessels in the £250k bracket – I too like day dreaming, but I think that was pushing things a little bit!

Regarding new boat tests and not offending advertisers, I think that perhaps some folk believe that all the readers fell out of a tree yesterday............... But I guess the assumption (and which is probably correct) is that the target audience for the latest new boat will be "guided" by what they read. I stand to be corrected, but I do not recall ever reading that a new vessel has been something to avoid, for either value, build quality or supposed purpose – but maybe this is because unlike other consumer goods they are all great value, built for a lifetime and have been designed to excel at all purposes. I wouldn’t exactly call the new boat tests infomercials, but a more suitable phrase does escape me at the moment.

Obviously none of the above is aimed at anyone in particular, and perhaps not the best thread to pick for my “hello” post onto this forum…………….. J
