Survey Frequency?

My boat, which is 27 years old, had a favourable survey in 2008 - the surveyor commented that the boat was very sound and solidly built and would be just as good in another 25 years. Now my insurance company has suggested that they'll want another survey before reinsuring in 2014. As surveys don't come cheap, and there is nothing to suggest that my boat has any problems, is this some subtle way for my insurers to say that they no longer want my business? How long is a reasonable interval between surveys?

I've just had mine done for GJW - they ask for one every 7 years. I know some peeps complain and say just change companies but I'm happy to have someone crawl over the boat and thoroughly check it. It also makes me think about those old fire extinguishers and dated gas hoses etc which could just be ignored. It also helps to support the agreed insurance value. For a value below £10K they just ask for a self-declaration of seaworthiness.

I think you can have a survey just for insurance that's more basic than a full pre-purchase survey, however my suggestion is switch to Yachting 24. Fully comp. without a survey on my 40 yr old Vega for £150 odd, no survey and underwritten by Pantaenius who have a very good rep. I've just switched to them after being insured with one of the online 3rd party insurers...

Survey requirements vary from company to company. Get some alternative quotes to see how competitive your current premium is and whether others require a survey. You will probably find if you have the evidence that you can get a better deal elsewhere your existing company will change their tune! If they don't go elsewhere.

I'm with St Margarets/Haven who recently came in for some stick here, but I think the M.D. replied and explained well.

As my boat is over 10 years old I was asked to have a survey, then a couple of years later they asked for another one; when I replied 'you must be joking ?! ' they agreed and said ' OK, no more surveys required'.

Do shop around for surveyors though.

Probably because the value is low - that would be the case with GJW. With an agreed value of £37,000 then the £298 I pay seems OK to me and another £45ish a year is acceptable for al the reasons I gave. My boat is of similar age to the OP's.

Been with them for 13 years only survey carried out was when i bought the boat now 37 years old

How can that be?

Everyone knows, for sure, that insurance companies are not here to rip us all off and would only insure boats that are less than six months old.

And getting younger all the time...
