Survey and sea trial today

Remember to display flags Romeo, Uniform, and Numeral One :)

Have a good day and crossed fingers everything is to your satisfaction and pleasure.

A couple of issues which hopefully we can resolve without too much fuss, but we did have to curtail the sea trial for the key issue (below).

Smoke and strong burning smell which upon checking was from the rear of the port engine.

Can anyone explain why oil should be dribbling from the turbo manifold gaskets (NB hot / exhaust side, not air side) this was landing on the hot manifold, hence the smoke & fumes. My concern is the turbo oil seal has blown.

Oh no, that isn’t good!

Are you minded to see if things can be resolved to your satisfaction?

Very - I like the boat and for the initial but brief part of the sea trial she handled impeccably. And this is my third attempt this year !

I have insisted the vendor needs to fix the critical issues (all non declared, all fixable), and he might need to replace the port turbo charger, but I can live with a few minors on a 30 year old boat.

Sounds like a very pragmatic approach - hope it all works out for you ?
.

We actually rejected our current boat after the third sea trial and our deposit was returned, the owner lived in Yorkshire, the boat was in Kent and he must have been a nightmare for the brokers (who were very good) as he was very difficult to contact, after us looking around for about a month (the other boat we were interested in before seeing this one had sold) and finding nothing the broker got back in touch and the major issue was resolved and we agreed to fix several others with a sunstantial price reduction.

I hope the vendor understands that your request is entirely reasonable. Will you seek to check the repairs with a second and hopefully complete sea trial?

I had a turbo go on my Sabre 300s some years ago in an previous boat, leaked hot fumes into the engine room which triggered the fire extinguisher! A real mess to clean up but I had the turbo refurbished and it came back like new, wasn't too expensive either, around £300 from memory but it was a while ago.

shouldn't be that difficult tbh Trevor.
Either some seal or even cheaper pipes sending returning oil to the turbo perished hardened (if silicone rubber).
I should guess a turbo removal, rebuilt refit at worst...
