Boater question,

Do you start your engines before you sort warps out to leave?

Or warps first then engine?,

Do you disconnect shore power before starting engines or after?

Do you have a routine that you follow , that if interrupted means you may forget something?

And who says what needs done when.?

Re: Surprise surprise

Do engine and bilge pump checks first. Then blowers on. Switch off shore power, leaving lead plugged in.Then test run engines for a minute. Switch off engines. Make sure fuel feeds are on. Test leg trims, tabs, bowthruster, anchor winch, instruments, vhf, phone, heating, gas, water tank level. Check tender, o/b fuel. If guests on - 2 minute safety briefing. Single up the lines. Disconnect power line. Start up engines. Let go lines. Go.

Sounds fussy but it works for me. Roy

single up ropes, flash up the monster, on plotter, instruments, GPS, vhf, check water flow, gas on, get SWMBO to put kettle on, throw of remaining ropes and go.

Depends when i find the key

Or warps first then engine?,
see above

Do you disconnect shore power before starting engines or after?
not usually connected. Should i connect it so that i can then decide how to answer the question?

Do you have a routine that you follow , that if interrupted means you may forget something?
cant be bothered with routines....usually too busy trying to find the key.

And who says what needs done when.?
always talking to myself....seems to work ok but dont always get the answers I'd like....

I remove all ropes just leaving the hook up to hold me to the pontoon (the kids want to watch TV to the last minute)
Start engines - then remember to to switch on the blower.
Then clear all the bags from over the engine hatch and have a look in. Yep the engine is running.
Put all the bags back.
Cast off the Hook up.
Put the boat in gear and realsie that the tender is still chained to the bows.
Grab a boat hook to reach the now disappearing pontoon.
Grab another boat hook to replace the one that has just come into two bits, one in my hand and the other dangling off the pontoon.
Ask son if can he "jump that far". Dispite his fears tell him to try anyway, giving him a welcome push.
Chuck him a rope. He then chucks back the rope so I can tie it on first !!

Then we start all over again. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Beat crew out of bunks.
Donkeys on to warm through. Thats after all engine checks.
Fire up whatever instruments I need.
Sail covers off, all halyards etc, ready for hoisting. Sheets ready.
Lines ready, check fenders etc. leccy off, coil up lead and stow.
Beat crew, just in case they do something wrong!
Beat crew again for crying.
Leave port, get fenders aboard, untie at leisure.
Beat crew again, just in case they forgot the first beating.
Holy stone decks!

Anybody fancy coming sailing???

If you can't find your keys, you could always throw a line to some of these rowers you find such a nuisance and get them to tow you up and down the river/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Cram crew (5) into rubber dighy
Cram supplies for the day into same dinghy
Elbow wife in face (3 times) starting little yam
Annoy live-aboards with noisy little yam at 06:00
No shore power - so batteries 1&2 on first
Bilge blowers before anything else
Legs down (wifes, not mine!)
Check engines
Actuate petrol/lpg changeover and back.
Annoy live-aboards by starting motors and warming up for 5 mins at 2000 rpm
Change to LPG
Slip moorings and slip stealthily out of harbour
Sort out all the other crap whilst going along

I enjoy looking for my keys...its one of those little rituals that lets me know all is well with the world and I wouldnt expect you to understand.

Could you please make your mind up whether youi want to be in that coffin or not? I have several rowers heaped up outside from skirmishes earlier in the season and they are beginning to pong a little. Tried to get the local bonfire boys to take them away but they muttered something about Health and Safety and declined........

Kettle on first, stow covers, single up lines, ask who's making the coffee, make coffee , disconnect shore power, check engines still there, argue over who's driving, switch on instruments, start engines, let go lines and suggest crew get back on board, and tell crew I don't need instructions on how to manouver the boat/forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Correction to above post,

I put kettle on and make tea,
then
" You take boat out"
"no you take boat out"
"no i did it last time"
first one to the helm seat takes it out,
tea cups put down where they alway spill,
get cloth,
,
remember life jacket as climbing out on side deck,
back in to cabin, into cabin,
who tidied up life jackets last,
can you give me a hint where they are,
take fenders in as we leave berth,
Prying we don't touch anything, as marina berth is just out marina office,
by time half way down fairway fenders in,
all 12 of them
, ropes run to back and secured.
Now wheres my tea.

We cannot manage warp speed, so don't have to worry about it before or after starting the engine.

John

<hr width=100% size=1>I am the cat but I am only 6.

1) engine checks, including drive belts for tension
2) raw water filters
3) switch on equipment, log VHF etc., plus passage plan.
4) start engines make sure water coming from exhausts, let them warm up a bit
5) disconnect shore power, and release bow line
6) slip warps and springs, place passeralle on quay.
7) leave berth after checking all is clear, have crew bring in fenders and stow lines.
