Surface drives - retrofit?

That's far too sensible! But thanks - I think you're right :encouragement:

no!

don't listen to him!
just think rooster tail, massive one, nice photos from the beach of you passing by at 40kn, that's what you think first.

Then go for the full works, trimable drives, if arnesons are expensive, built your own, just need some ss tubing, bearings, seals, bellows, universal joints and a few serious rams for altering angle and steer. Easy

Don't worry if it falls apart every now and again, just need it for the week long summer every year, just make sure you don't miss it :p

On a more serious note, is there any cheaper/lighter/smaller alternative to arnesons and I'm not talking about the Farsco pic that should be great fun!

cheers

Well, you've gone and done it now - off to the bank tomorrow to remortgage... I'll be the first person to stick a $25000 drive on a $1000 boat!

I've actually had a few replies from various web enquiries - 3 so far... I found most were predictably expensive, but offered an Arneson ASD6 from the US for $4000 (used but complete and some spare odd and end he says)! Trouble is carriage, UK import duty, VAT etc would make that more like $7000 and that's a bit much for a bit of experimental fun. :ambivalence: I'm not sure my metalwork skills would result in much more than a washer either so that probably rules out DIY :)

Nah
This is the real easier way -- :). If you are bit handy ?

And with a surface drive, you will need to move engine forwards (ref jet-drive) to fit gearbox, which is part of the outdrive package to start with ...

Yes - a few seem to be external/in the drive, but that goes back to the complex bit and effectively having all the intricacies immersed in saltwater... Limited space inside too - starting to realise why the sterndrive is so common in this size vessel! ;)

I have a couple of Dulger surface drives that I have been keeping for the right project.. probably needs to be a twin diesel 30+ footer though. It's bound to be a bit of an experiment with running angles etc. but I imagine there could be a useful gain in efficiency over shafts.

Thanks, that's one I hadn't found. I'll add to my research list for some further investigation. :encouragement:

Didnt Mike Bellamy at Lancing produce a surface drive of sorts?

I did find a couple of drives listed in their pricebook - LM17 and LM20. Costs look sensible, but no mention of stocking a gearbox that I could see - I'll make some enquiries. (Images look a little agricultural, but not too worried about that aspect.) Lots or food for thought and I'll keep looking and see if anything interesting comes along.
