If I had been - I would have suffered JJ's fate!!!!

Forecast charts still look resonably hopeful - though the met office shows a little low off the soutwest approaches on Tuesday which no-one else shows.

SWMBO's look happy as they luv a flat calm crossing under engine, I prefer f5-6 on a broad reach.

Sickie Excuses Part I

Extract from Metcheck -its really comming
Added [Wednesday July 30 2003 : 4:42:00 PM]

Next week sees the start of what promises to be one of the best UK heatwaves since 1990.
High pressure will build across the UK bringing blue cloudless skies and temperatures up to 27°c in many areas.

So are you gonna sweat it out at your desk?
If you are thinking of throwing a sickie (something here at Metcheck which we certainly wouldn't condone ;-)) then we have compiled a list of the top 3 excuses which everyone else uses and which the boss won't believe :-

- Been awake all night being sick (drink related)
- Have a serious headache (hangover)
- Washing machine flooded the kitchen

Have a fantastic week and enjoy the sunshine

Maybe the sunshine and calm seas are coming- but this SWMBO who will be skippering her first channel crossing on Sat is slightly more concerned that the Met Office's 2-5 day English Channel planner predicts "visibility moderate occ poor with a risk of fog" for Sat, and continued risk of fog patches on Sun and Mon. Should I go? Can someone with a better knowledge of weather than me advise what time of day these fog patches in high pressure might occur- and where- i.e near land or in the shipping lanes!!!

I was surprised at the forcast you reported and had a look at the inshore forcast for 1700 Friday to 1700 Saturday "visibility moderate becoming good".
Then shipping forcast Dover 1755 today "Vis moderate or good".
I am not an expert on weather but if I was in your situation ie. about to do your trip, I would be fairly happy about the weather outlook
I looked on the Met. site but could not find the forcast you were referring to.
If you want a responce from other posters I suggest you post this as a new item on Scuttlebut. Head it up first time across the Channel, or something like that to attract attention.
Which boat are you taking, the Macwester or the Folkboat?
Hope this helps. Good luck. Paul

Just read another post which mentioned a site which you might find usefull.
www.ndbc.noaa.gov/Maps
this is the "national data buoy center" which seems to be an American site which gets live data from buoys around the world. There is one near the Channel which will give you an idea about current conditions. If site says not available or similar click on home and go from there.

Good morning! if you are going Saturday, there is the remains of a cold front which will be near the French coast. the poor vis will refer to showers - which should not be a worry. I cannot see that typical seafog will be a problem - with any likelyhood receeding as the week end goes on.

My advice - GO.
If it is your own boat, think seriously of radar, it really does give you peace of mind when you do get caught.

Lood luck - don't panic in the shipping lanes, they are not that bad - just make sure you have the hand bearing compass handy, just check the bearings regularly of threatening ships. You find an amazing number of ships give way if you are sailing and motoring as stand on. but beware - a few won't!!! Don't think that you will get much sailing though - fill up the deisel!!!!

Thank you all for advice- as I do have radar I'm planning to give it a go. It does indeed look like I'll be doing a lot of motoring, so I'm off to get a motor cone. and more diesel. and more seasick pills. and more euros.......
