Sunsail in the Solent

A few years ago going up the Lymington River at about 17.30 on a lovely summers evening we were confronted by the opi fleet. Nippers 7/8 years olds swarming all over the river. We slowed down as much as possible and crept up trying our best to be accomodating. The abuse, the four letter words, the aggression thrown at us was amazing. Sweet, beautifully
spoken, foul mouthed children, dinghy experts in the making. Dinghy sailors, perfect manners, hmmmmmmm?

Was a classic never to be forgotten.

Oppibrats are a notorious pestilence and their parents are worse. It's not fair to extend the opprobrium they rightly receive to other dinghy sailors.

Jumbleduck,

I would wish it on someone like Tranona, not you; but the obvious response is ' you'd know all about it if Sunsail took over the place where you moor '.

That's the problem, they make as much effort to be considerate to anyone else as a Tiger II tank.

Fields in short supply that will take a loaded 747, especially over an ocean.

Whilst agreeing that dinghy sailing is a good intro, it's not the only one, and in a sense sailing a cruising boat is much more about management, met, nav, seamanship, etc than about boat handling and wind awareness. Very few dinghy sailors are going to step onto a cruiser and know when to reef, how to anchor safely, how to keep batteries in good condition, how to spring off a berth, how to come out from an inside berth of a raft-up, how to cross a TSS, etc.

Shush dear. You talking much too much common sense. Not allowed on the forum, especially this thread. You might get Jetters even more worked up!

Not really noticed them being anymore inconsiderate or considerate than other groups of people, be that racing fleets going round a particular course/ a YC Rally chatting loudly in a pub / club / pontoon or other boats rafting alongside and occasionally being noisy / heavy of foot.

Are you going to answer my question in post#115 or are you avoiding the issue?

You forgot "check that there are no lines o/b before putting the engine in gear.

Never seen a bu&&ers muddle quite as good as that unleashed by a group of Firefly sailors picking up floating moorings when sailing 24' keelboats. Took hours to unravel.

hello

I am current a 3rd year Navigation and maritime science student currently conducting a study into the yachtsman's attitude towards the lifejacket. It would be great if you could assist me in my research by completing this very short questionnaire, Please just follow the link below.

Thank you for your time!

Dear Emmit

Welcome to the forum but you will just antagonise everyone if you keep hijacking current or ancient threads with your survey request.

Hang on JD, Ben Ainslie won a prize for sailing Opies in Lymington (long time ago). Or have I just proved your point?

At our club we have fleets of various dinghies - notably not Optimists - for the Junior Section to sign the book and take out - with a safety boat handy.

However I'm with Jumbleduck, anyone approaching an Optimist fleet does so at their peril, the little brats probably have North sails, are so cut-throat they'd make Jack Aubrey cringe and apparently learned their collision reg's from the Hayne's manual on the Exocet...
