Unless it's called or tweaker, or even worse if you have one of our American "cousins" aboard, they will call it a "twing" - but then of course they have vangs, knotmeters(yeuch), PFD's - and to them a roach has nothing to do with a sail!

Ivar Dedekams sail and rig tuning is nice, but North Sails has two books which are better. They're called 'performance racing trim' and 'performance racing tactics'. They also have a CD-rom version. You should be able to buy them from your local North-sailmaker.

IMHO Dedekams' book is nice as a reference; North Sails' books however go into more detail, and better explanations of what's happening. North also arranges courses based on their books. I enjoyed such a course two months ago, and found it very educational.

And before you ask, I have both Dedekams' (actually 3 copies), and North's books.

Quick note on kites. We did the BUSA match racing this weekend on the RYA's first class 8s. They are set up to end for end gybe and have what my (slightly more knowlegable) crew was calling Twinners. These were blocks that the kite sheets went through that were on the end of lines that could be adjusted from the cockpit. The purpose was to make the guy more stable by providing a shorter lead from the pole to the first turning block. Worked pretty well too!

We hardy Sonata OD types call these beasts Downf**kers for obvious reasons; i.e. 'get that F**king thing pulled down!' after you jibe. But twingers is equally acceptable.
