sunrise or sunset - which do you prefer?

I love a good sunrise while under way

the whole day ahead of you

the air is usually crystal clear

the mobos are in bed




but I also love a sunset sail

that misty look to the light

the breeze decaying away

a quiet night at anchor or on a safe pontoon lies ahead



so hard to choose.... thinking of a blog again

Love a sunrise, the quiet also goes with it.

But being a night person and NOT a morning person - bear , head, sore - I vote for warm sunsets.

A lovely sunrise can't be beaten... My sailing is often around the clock, so the feeling of having an entire day ahead on the water is always the most satisfying. If it has been a cold watch (0300 - 0600) then the early signs of dawn indicate that things will only get better!

Sunsets are great, but the nights can be long and cold - they are always over too quickly!

In a similar vane Spring always beats Autumn.

A good sunrise is spectacular, but rare. Generally dawn is announced by a dismal dark night turning into dismal grey day and far from enjoying the prospect of the day ahead they gernerally indicate to me that I should be in bed.

Often dawn at sea is cold, grey and it's hours till breakfast.

At sea I prefer sunrise, for all of the reasons mentioned, on land I prefer sunsets, for all of the reasons mentioned.

I really don't much like sunsets on long passages, I always get a feeling of dread as the light goes, the feeling passes after an hour or two but I get it all the same and have done for the 20 or so years that I've been sailing.

On any passage involving overnight sailing then the sunrise is the one that raises my spirits.

At anchor with a G&T to hand, sunsets everytime. [ Spirits involved again ]

If I'm at sea, I'd take the sunset. I enjoy night sailing, and a beautiful sunset is a nice way to get into it.

If we're arriving somewhere unlit, I'd take dawn over dusk, so that there's no hurry.

In already anchored - sunrise. I like the tranquility

+1 Even though I have done an awful lot of night sails, I still think, "Here we go, let's hope we'll get through the night" at sunset and "Phew" at sunrise. Once it's actually dark I'm fine and tend to really enjoy it, but even a cold grey dawn is welcome.

Quite often, if it's the choice between a dawn and dusk departure I'll have a lie in and leave in the evening. Early tides are a sure sign of being pressed for time.

Sunsets for me. Acording to my sister all I ever take pictures of is boats and sunsets.
I often sail at sunset and arive late.
I've seen many sunrises but prefere no to. Though I have to admit I do enjoy a nice sunrise the chill has a fresh feeling to it.

If you go far enough north in summer it just goes from sunset to sunrise I particularly enjoy a night at sea without true darkess. You have to be far enough offshore to get away from light pollution to appreciate

Definitely the sunrise. Nothing to beat an early start to catch the tide, the anticipation, the delightful thrill of seeing dawn, the bacon sandwiches, the prospect of a day at sea, bring it on.
