Sunk vivacity 20

btw, the cutout is for the ouboard prop - be careful on the clearance :)

Can I just add to that.

There was a suggestion of making a dinghy style hinged rudder that can be lifted up.

Be very careful is you do that.

My little boat has a tilting rudder, so with my swing keel lifted up and the rudder up, I can go into very shallow water (or more usually sneak out of the harbour as soon as the tide comes in before other boats can)

BUT with the rudder up, I can barely turn to port at all, as the raised rudder will foul the OB prop. So it takes a bit of care to avoid a tight turn to port with the rudder up.

wouldn't say cheaper products I would just say it has not got the "Marine" badge on it .

I wouldn't waste my money on Marine paint to be honest with you, would you paint a chalet on a beach with Marine paint? I didn't and it is looking ansum we paint it every 2 years with a good exterior paint why should a boat be any different.

I designed and built my own boat and she is still going strong after over 2 years with using leftovers from the sites.
The 4x2 timbers frames came out of a skip and the ply is only 9mm WBP with matting & west system epoxy the paint is just normal exterior paint.

What I am trying to say is if you love the water it doesn't have to cost the earth to enjoy it.

Mike, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that video (great music too!). Well done - what an inspiration you are ! :-)

Thanks for the info Dave its been noted. She will be on a deep water mooring so I will keep with the fixed rudder that is nearly finished.

Glad you liked the video Reptile Smile. I have since built a little cuddy on her to keep the wind off me when I am winter fishing on the Tamar.

Last year I built this little darling for me to keep fit and muck around in the shallows

It certainly doesn't hurt that you're no mean carpenter Mike! :)

Good luck with the project, I think you'll be making quite a few eat their words!

Well Mike,
Great video. Looks like youve got good hands on you man.

I also use simple exterior gloss on all my boats, and it lasts for years. Last coat on my E-Boat lasted for 6 years before needing done again in April this year. I only use "Johnstones" brand ext gloss though. Great paint at decent prices. All mixed to my shade of blue locally.
Careful selection can yield great savings for "Non Marine" products that will do exactly the same job.
Instead of using Sikaflex on a wooden boat I restored, I used a car body bumper adhesive that was essentially the same stuff, but a lot cheaper.#

Always keeping the eyes open for that useful bargain!

It really depends if the OP wants to keep the boat as it would have been or whether class rules - such as they are for these boats - are out of the window. I'd suggest a daggerboard style cassette rudder as you can shove it down as much as depth will allow, get some steerage and not give yourself a heavy tiller or risk catching the prop.

A good article on DIY on the Cherub site - http://uk-cherub.org/doku.php/tech/rudderstock - obviously, scale everything up and use less racy materials where appropriate. I ended up using an old International Moth daggerboard as the rudder blade for my Cherub. Of a similar size to the Vivacity, I know the Limbo 6.6 uses this rudder setup.

The only reason for suggesting the swing up rudder was for a drying mooring. It avoids having to lift a big lump of wood in while bouncing around on your mooring and then having to put it in your cabin. On a deep mooring there is no point.

Hi there!
Here's some photo's of the rudder on our Vivacity 20ft - Looking at them I wonder what I was playing a!t - not one photo of the whole thing!! :D Btw we have an outboard mount next to the rudder pintels, I haven't even mounted the outboard on the boat, so haven't a clue if there's any issue there...

Thank you MarcJ , not sure what you did with the forum thread but thank you again for the pictures.:)
I have seen a few Vivacity rudders now and they are all different in size and shape leading to believe they get damaged if you don't lift them on a tidal mooring.
The one I built last weekend is 1.600mm 350mm longer than yours and the shape is a lot rounder

I was going to antifoul and paint the white stripe this weekend but seeing the weather is going to be lovely I am off fishing in Alice.

Is it easy to get that half round rail in hardwood? All I have seen in the right profile is softwood fence rail! As I only need a few feet I might just use that and just resign myself to replacing it again in a couple of years.
