Summer visitor berthing for extended south west trip

Brixham Marina is full with a waiting list for berths, like many others, so availability for visitors depends on bertholders informing the marina that they are away. If you have any principles then I don't expect to see you in Brixham

My sentiments exactly, it’s like renting a hotel room for a year and then finding out someone is sleeping in your room when you are not there.
I have never told a marina when I’m away and don’t feel guilty about it.

Brixham would have spare births if they put there commercial head on. I have recently sold my boat, tried to get a refund on my annual contract and was refused, then tried to say to them that you can fill the birth from tomorrow and give me 1/3rd of what you get extra, again refused. Why would anyone release there birth, I cannot even let anyone else use it .

Strange attitude that Premier have , so you’re berth is sat empty? , or are they using it without your knowledge if berths are in short supply? Or the small print says that they can do as they like ?‍♂️

We yachties in Brittany have a good system that should be in the UK too if the marinas weren't the money grabbing sharks they are.
For those who don't know it's called 'Passport Escales' and the card and the App come with most, if not all, marina contracts so if you check out of your home berth online when you're off cruising you'll get 2 free nights in just about any other French marina you fancy (also including, strangely, MDL in the UK and many marinas in Spain and Portugal too.
Sorry, thread drift
Happily I'm off back there later this week

I was moored at Brixham all of last season so I know the marina well, they also have a large visitors pontoon.
The principal is this, I have paid to use my berth for 12 months, if I decide to go away for a few nights and the marina then fills this berth then technically that money is mine minus an admin fee but as that’s not the case it’s not in my interest to tell them.
What if I change my mind or the weather turns rubbish and I come back to my berth to find it full? What happens then if the marina has filled all of the other berths?

What if you’re miles from your home marina on that cruise and the weather kicks up real nasty. What if there’s a lovely sheltered marina nearby. What if when you arrive you see empty berths but they can’t let you use one because they have arsey bertholders who refuse to let them know how long they will be away for, perhaps because they are forumites who were persuaded by your brilliant argument not to tell them…

One of the advantages of sailing in lake Solent is that if just going off for a day sail you might decide to spend the night somewhere and not return to home port but if you find a full port if absence of a pre booking at places like Yarmouth it’s not really to hard to turn round and generally you blow back downwind to Portsmouth fairly quickly so hence for overnight stays unless pre booked we tend to keep home berth free for return but for longer trips where you have invested in a few nights elsewhere we would advise. Certainly for places where you cannot book as a visitor (anywhere in West Country it seems) then residents advising and gaining a fee credit seems a sensible practice. We were certainly grateful to bertholders in Brixham who was away in July last year for the week leaving us a lovely berth towards end of walkway with pleasant views etc so and also found the marina staff there most helpful . We also liked the berthing system there which gave us a few free nights due to previous use of that groups marina in the Solent as visitors.
