Hi,

I am looking for a summer (part time) mooring in Saundersfoot, Tenby, Milford area.

I am in Cardiff Bay but want to put the boat there for the summer.

I am a fisherman and the baot is an Arvor 250AS 2006 which is 28ft with the platform and weighs only 3700kgs, semi planning hull with a draft of less than 1/2mtr. It can sit on the flat happily.

I know these may be hard to come by but also know that some Yachts sail away for months in the summer so was hoping someone would "rent" or "sublet" their mooring to me and my partner for a time to raise some cash.

Prepayment would not be an issue if that is how its done and a deposit would also be available.

Boat is modern, well kept and owners are mid 40's and respectable.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Steve

There are many moorings within Milford Haven. You may wish to consider Rudders Boatyard or Lawrenny Yacht Station as alternatives to Dale. Both are very sheltered, about 10NM from the Heads, i.e. the open sea at the entrance to the Haven.

There is no speed limit for most or all of this passage down the Haven, so presumably the location would be reasonable. I see that the cost for a 28' boat on a mooring at Rudders, for 6 months, would be £874. For Lawwrenny the cost would be £830. (Amounts based on website figures, including VAT).

One of the best places to be, in the Haven, is Milford Marina - easy sea and up-Haven access, excellent shelter but lock limiting entry & exit times. You may like to phone the office on 01646 696312 and ask for a quote - speak to Eira Griffiths. She has always been both courteous and helpful. Last summer there were some vacant berths so you might be able to do a deal. There are quite a few angling boats in Milford Marina.

Good luck.

We have our fishing boat at Dale in the summer and Milford in the winter. Pretty sure you will get in at Milford, but Dale may be another story.......moorings are so cheap there that they are like rocking horse poo and people tend to hang on to them. Worth a call though.

cheers Guys, some nice options there, trying to get a little closer to Tenby though if possible?

By the time I get out of the Milford Haven and over to Tenby it would be a while yes? how far?

Do you still have to go around the "Shooting Range?

keep em coming...

The ranges are active most days of the week. If you give them a shout on 16 early, they can often plan around you and bring you across close inshore with one of the range patrol boats as an escort. Otherwise they can push you 12 miles offshore which is a real PITA. If you play the game with them they are usually helpful and will work some compromise if they can.

Are you sure it's 12 miles? I have been asked to stay 2 miles off the coast but never 12.
Last year, whilst trying to get across the ranges before they started firing I picked up a pot rope off St Gowens head. When I freed it there was about 10m of floating rope, so beware.
I have always stayed outside the ranges, when they are firing but they can only request that. Should you wish to go across, they have to stop firing.

Maybe it depends on what is being played with at the time but certainly last time I went across it was 12 miles although I finished up being escorted across close in.....thank God.

Whilst I'm sure you would not want to be deliberately unhelpful to the pongos, you never have to go around the range. You can always go through it since it isnt a prohibited area - they have to stop shooting until you are clear. What you legally arent allowed to do is to stop in the middle of the range and anchor for lunch, for example.

I was always told this when I went to meetings at the UKHO but I still confirmed that it was correct when I had a chat with the range control office. They asked that we went as tight inshore as we could and they would continue firing over our heads

Range control told me that they couldn't stop me going straight across but then asked me politely if I would either go twelve miles offshore or they would escort me through close in. The other compromise is to get through early before the ranges open. Can't remember if they open at 08:00 or 09:00.

Thanks all - Sorted!

Thanks to you all for your suggestions, I think we are sorted now cheers.

This firing range thing is something hey? last year at Tenby whilst drifting west of Caldy fishing we were constantly being told to move, via VHF16, I know you guys say it's not illegal as such but they were very "official sounding" when we wandered into their space!

And I think going through close in whilst having missiles going over us would be kinda fun?

Cheers anyway, no doubt will see some of you down that way in the summer!

Regards,

Steve

We were 5 miles off once and were invitied to go another 6. We were buzzed by a jet and then had the escort vessel arrive promptly, they seemed quite sure thats what they wanted us to do!

Just to clarify, I believe that boats have a right of navigation but not a right to fish in the range areas.

The action you should take when contacted by range control, Castlemartin or Manorbier (the two are separate and don't seem to liase with each other) depends on where you are. For example, when we were in our previous boat (a reasonably quick small motor cruiser), en route from Milford Haven to Tenby, Manorbier range called us when we were about one third of the way through their patch. I explained that a detour 12 miles offshore was not acceptable and that we would continue through towards Tenby. That proved to be perfectly acceptable.

There's also a small arms range at Penally but we've never encountered that in use.

When we brought the Grumpy Uncle down to Dale on the final leg from Freshwater East to Dale, we were contacted when we were abeam Stackpole head then directed 8 miles offshore, then on a westerly heading for about 10 miles, then allowed back inshore! At about 5kts that put about 3 hours on our journey time. Never thought of asking to go in tight to the shore tbh.

The distance is relative to what weapons systems they are using,i.e,from small arms up to Challenger 2 tanks and night fireing exercises go on there as well.
