I need some help and suggestions here people. I've had a very large stroke of luck with a cheque from my bank due to the PPI mis-selling calamity and I'm looking for a new boat.

I have £2000 to spend and I want something small enough to sail by myself which won't be a burden on me (18ft - 22ft ideally). I want to sail it along coast and creeks, possibly berthing near Southend or Queenborough, so not too deep a draught. The boat will, however, handle well wherever it's sailed and must accommodate at max, myself and my two teenage boys.SWMBO couldn't give a flying fart about boats!

Preferably with some goodies but not over-endowed with chart-plotters. Must have a back up engine and would prefer an outboard but I may be persuaded otherwise.

I've been looking at Hurley's but have I missed something out there that you would be willing to steer me in the way of?

Thanks in advance.

For that money it's not a case of looking for particular designs, just see what is available.

The Hurley 20 is a good boat - obviously go for twin keel.

Hurley 22 twin keel is good but price is probably over £2k

Manta 19 lift keel is good but rare

Fantasie 19 reliable but slow

Valiant 18 adequate

SeaWych - easy to re-sell but not over rapid

That's just a few, have a look around your area as transport costs would probably knock the deal on the head.

Thanks for the list. If there's a nice enough roomy boat, dry with a solid performance then I may stretch the budget but I'll add these to the list and keep looking.

It pains me to say it (as I run the owners "association"!), but I think the Fantasie will be too small for your max estimated crew - in all other aspects I think she'd be a good bet.... I sold mine last year and now sail.... a Hurley 20 :)

You might get a hurley22 for that price just but I'd be surprised if the sails were serviceable.

Is something going on with this thread ? Twivce I've posted to have it disappear.

Anyway trying again, I was going to say you won't get an Anderson 22 anywhere near budget, but there is one; see ' for sale ' on the website in my signature below.

No connection myself other than I put up free ad's for A22 members.

It all depends on whether the boat and location suit you, there's not much point seeking a particular design at this budget, there are lots of boats which would give heaps of fun, it's a case of what's near enough to you to

A, go to see

B, transport or sail to your mooring.
