Our first sail to the islands was last summer, but my childhood hols were spent on Guernsey. Lovely place.
My twopenneth . .
a) Alderney
well it rained consistently when we were there, but even as first timers we had no trouble getting into, or mooring at Braye [from Weymouth, couldn't make Guernsey that day] [I do know however, how bad Braye can be]. Very very carefully planned our early morning passage down the Swinge - high state of nervousness all the way (deserved reputation) but it went like clockwork. Across to
b) Beaucette - first class.
Much nicer than St Peter Port which looked far too crowded and noisy for my liking (very tight manouvring in the aisles, too). Nice bus ride into St P P or hire some bikes. Nice walk around the headland to L'Ancresse bay (er, I think that's the name - faces north-ish, sandy and we anchored there and swam, all one day).
c) Herm - ditto.
The passage over there from Guernsey is rock strewn, so watch tides and do some better nav than me who was alerted by the sight of nearby fishermen eagerly watching me be somewhere I didn't oughter be, another grockle heading for certain trouble . . . but I extricated myself, so all ok after all. Anyway, we found the [part drying, on sand] anchoring/mooring between the Rosiere steps and the harbour to be quiet and idyllic. The weather was also quiet, however.
d) Sark - I know from old how memorable Sark is, but . .
we found Gosselin to be a bit too exposed. I agree with other comments about dinghies, tides and swell - had trouble tying up even using my very long painter. Then a very scary slippery ladder climb onto equally slippery concrete steps. I'm not bothered by heights, but slippery heights do bother me! Nearby Brecqou looks like it could owned by a James Bond villain!
you might also get over to
e) Dielette
which was ok . . but a bit boring? [although a good walk along the nearby beach and dunes].
Have a great time! We did.
