Stupid question - how do I inflate my RIB

On mine (Zodiac) you push the green button to close the valve for inflation and push again to open if for deflation. Simple!

So you remove what ever adapter and air rushes out ——- until you then close it manually.

The example I,am referring to auto closes the valve when you twist off the adapter. Also auto opens it too ,as long as it’s not been left on the deflate rotation as said unlikely in a rib on the BP

No, when you push the valve in, it become a one way valve allowing inflation. It looks like this:
Pete I thought the same as you but when I push the green button on my valves, air just rushes out and it doesnt lock in either. I have a number of those spider adaptors and none of them work. I think mcanderson and Portofino are right. The act of pushing the adaptor into the valve has to depress the green button at the same time which is why there has to be some kind of cross piece in the middle

Are you still on the boat? I'll be down in a couple of days time; your valve looks the same as mine, and I have the correct adaptor on board. We could give this a try and if it works it would give you something to take to the chandlers to get a replacement?

No we came home yesterday. Yes if you have time on your hands it would be great if you could try your adaptor to see if it works. Thanks!

Evening Mike, I ambled round to Mole Sud just now, my adaptor does indeed fit the valves on your dinghy, so next time we coincide you're welcome to borrow it to help your search for a replacement at the chandlers. In the meantime I've pumped up your (very soggy) tubes for you.

Jimmy thats very kind of you. My tubes were indeed flaccid and I owe you a beer or 3. Any chance of a pic of your adaptor?
