TAMD61A main filter.

Absolutely completely stuck tight on both engines (doing end of season service).

Installed by me last year (done lots of times before on these very engines) - usual install with film of oil on gaskets and hand tight only.

So far I have exploded (and they do explode into teeny bits!!) TWO chain type removers and broken one big pliers type remover.

Bear in mind I've blown up three tools so far, so these are REALLY stuck.. Don't even think about screwdriver through the can trick, or trying to knock round with hammer and screwdriver/chisel...

What next people??

sounds like the rubber washer has welded itself to the metal , can you get to the base of the filter to maybe get a good knife blade or broken hacksaw blade to split the rubber all the way round and then clean up later ??

Jubilee clip tightened on the filter at the base, apply hammer to clip via suitable drift.

edit- a layer of rubber, washing up glove type, under the jubilee clip will help

I've never faced a problem as severe as yours but I use a Laser 2830 Filter Wrench - Metal Band available from Amazon. Screw it on the lowest (strongest) part of the filter and best of luck.
You won't like this suggestion since you have already drained the oil, but refill and warm up the engine and try again.

Second thoughts, maybe the highest part of the filter is the strongest if you can get the wrench up there.

I always use large swan neck pliers, mine will grip a filter 1-1/2 times that on a 61A, have had some very tight filters but nothing they won't tackle yet.

Snap on filter strap which has snap on long bar and attachable ratchet, take up the torque with another ratchet attached to the lower 3/8 drive adapter, each time you pull the bar take up the lower ratchet and pull with both hands, this is how I do the D9/11/12 engines.

You have tried everything I can recommend, but I have to say most people do them up far too tightly in the first place! The trick when putting on a new filter is to stick your finger in the oil and run that finger all around the new rubber seal. Then just turn the new filter on by hand as hard as you can! Don't use any tool! It won't leak and will turn off easily with a filter wrench next time you replace it.

good luck, I hope you get the old one off ok!

ps. If you can get a chain wrench onto the rim of the filter? Close to the engine it won't crush any more and may help to move it?

Part number A91C

Or at least that is the number on my Snap on filter strap which has never failed me in 20+ years

Yup, installed correctly with oil and only finger tight. Got a chain wrench onto the rim, coupled to a 1/2" drive breaker bar. The chain wrench snapped before the filter moved. The second chain wrench also snapped, as did the large filter pliers.

Properly, properly stuck, and I don't know why.
I've had the boat nine years and service the engines myself every year - always apply oil, always hand tight only... Why are they so stuck this year??

P4Paul, thank you.

Think I may try a thin hacksaw blade on the rubber gasket, as that must be what's stuck...

Although I have confidence in VP's suggestion as well as others, I'm really worried about damaging the filter mounts if I just keep increasing torque. I've already broken three tools - it's not like I'm not applying enough force!!

The 61a has a remote filter so yes you can unbolt the whole unit and use a good vice to hold the housing in place then undo the filter , believe me I've had to do this I the past.

Hi I don't see anybody saying try tightening it first! It's an old tip but can work!
