I am looking an oldish clinker launch and the engine in it is apparently a Stuart turner petrol engine and I have never heard of them.Does anyone know anything about it and is it still possible to get parts on the UK ? Any help much appreciated thanks . Tim

My Dad had an 8hp twin cylinder two stroke in a clinker cabin cruiser in the 70s, I used to polished the copper pipes on it for fun, all mates went and played football!! . I'll follow this thread with interest. If you have any pics of it send to my email address which can be found on my profile page.

Not sure about parts as Stuart turner are still at Henley on Thames but make pumps now, well they did way back.
I'd put a post on the at Thames forum sure there will be someone who knows for sure.

I had a twin cylinder Stuart Turner P55ME in a Hurley 22 many years ago. Once I had sorted out the cylinder bores which were too tight it ran very sweetly although I was never happy having to flood the carburettor with petrol to get it to start. Mine was a late model and had twin coils and points. I doubt that it had many years left in it when I sold the boat as the block was becoming quite corroded. I used to get spares for it in Poole but I don't think the firm is there any more.

Three sizes. 1.5hp used in dinghies and small launches, 5hp in bigger launches and yacht auxiliaries 8hp twin mostly as yacht auxiliaries. As already said nobody selling spares now as most engines died or were turned into anchors long time ago. However, if it is running might be worth a punt. Lovely when they are running, if a bit tricky with oiling plugs and leaking petrol. Problem is that if they do fail, there is nothing reasonable to replace them without major work (and cost).

just to fill you in I bought the boat today didn't get to look at it properly but only paid £700 for boat and trailer so worth a punt just for the noise it makes hopefully ideal for pottering around Fowey !! Many thanks for all the help, David Schofield was a great help.

Quite a few were fitted in clinker( later grp) launches in poole, made by Lathams a local boat builder and quite a few were used by PYC members as tenders to yachts moored well out in the harbour a task for which they were ideal . 4hp hand start 2 stroke with no charging . My first inboard owned was a Stuart turner 4hp in a 21ft marine ply Debutant bilge keeler. I fitted a car alternator to it to charge the boat battery but had to put a switch in to stop it charging unless/until the engine was warmed up and running above idle or it simply stalled it. clogged up exhausts were common and bad news to these engines, a friend had an 8hp one in his Macwester 26 and we spent a fun day once baking his exhaust in a beach bonfire in Christchurch harbour to try and clear the carbon build up that was sapping performance. later he took the bits into work and put them in a caustic bath for a real cleanout. I also remember renting small launches in Fowey to go out mackerel fishing in (1960s) these too had inboard Stuart turners I think. Not sure if parts are available but fun little buggers to play with and pretty simple to work on.

When Stuarts are running well they are great engines, when they don't want to start they are the spawn of the Devil. Ensure it is fed with fresh clean petrol with the correct fuel / oil ratio, normally 50:1.
Always have spare new correctly gapped spark plugs, Champions are recommended but NGK are generally better.
If starting is difficult replace with new plugs, old plugs cleaned and regapped are not good enough. Always replace at the start of the season.
Keep the ignition system clean and dry - very dry - especially if it has a magneto.
Occasionally drain the crankcase by loosening the plugs at the very bottom of the crankcase directly under the cylinder(s), port side. You will need Whitworth / BSF spanners.
Finally, try to avoid prolonged idling.

There is often a chap at Beaulieu boat jumble with a few 'restored' on a table... I think he was in Trunk Traders last year.... or at least down the bottom of the field at the end of the 'wall'

I actually bought the boat with a 4HP two stroke[ sounded fantastic for 5 minutes!] but 100 yards down the river in Fowey it stuck in reverse so towed it home and it's been on the trailer ever since -typical happy boating !!
Paul-sorry for the thread drift - my lad is on the team filming all the British rally championship so I will get him look out for any great footage of you in full flight and post on here if anyone would be interested .Otherwise send it to you privately-see you in September good luck !

We had one years and years ago all I can remember was it was short on power. When looked at we found the exhaust system (the bore) was less than half the inside dia about 3/8 inch of carbon blocking the pipe /flange from the engine. Cleaned it all out and it started giving a reasonable power output
