Stuart Turner/Lucas dynamo

My Stuart has a dynamo driven of the engine via a shaft coupling, looks like the unit needs a rebuild or a new one, does anyone have a suggestion for doing this?

It's not 'handy' for you, but "Dingbro" in Inverness do starter motor and alternator repairs. I'd imagine that close to you would be a similar facility.

There are branches of Dingbro elsewhere in Scotland; there's one in Greenock, for example. Don't know if they all do starter and alternator repairs, but presumably if the local branch doesn't, they can arrange for it to be done elsewhere.

Thanks for the replies, yes Scotland is a bit far,between posting yesterday and getting replies I called on my local classic car restorer who have me the name of an ex Lucas man in Solihull who is , according to my man, the best. I sent him the unit today so we will see how it goes, if good I will post his details on here for further reference, but only if he agrees.

You have a Lucas CA45 dynamo mounted on a saddle, no pulley simply two steel peg drives with with rubber spider coupling in between is that correct?

Your Lucas dynamo is simple as a wheelbarrow to overhaul, does not need a specialist. Once you have the unit off the engine undo the grub screw which secures the peg drive to the shaft, at the other end there are two slotted screws which hold the whole unit together, undo them and pull the ends off the body. You end up with front plate, back plate with brushes attached, armature and the body with stator winding's still attached to the back plate.

Clean up armature with some emery, undercut the segments with hacksaw blade slightly, new brushes and bang it all back together, 20 minute job at best...............

Jamie,uk based, Maldon on the mud, Latestarter, thanks for the info, the unit is seized solid so I suspect it may be beyond repair, yes I understand how to clean up, did a lot of this year's ago on the old clankers of lorry's I ran when my world was young!! But the reason for looking for someone was if it is beyond repair they may have spares to build a unit, or be able to adapt a new one to fit. Again thank you for your help.

If you look on Ebay you will see new CA45's are less expensive than old ones, why because the new ones come from India. Do not go there. Replacement field coils are generally from India if you get your own refurbed.

Remember if you see a good older one which has mounting flanges on the ends you can swap them over with your own as you are strap mount.

Dont forget to polarise it before fitting-they dont aways work without this simple action carried out.
