Great pics, thanks! When I saw the title I thought it was a joke /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I've spent many long, long winter evenings in Stromness (aka the town that time forgot). Is that centaur still out on the swinging mooring near the harbour entrance?

I was at Kirkwall on Orkney a couple of years ago walking around the newish marina and was glad my boat was at home on its mooring, even though there is a breakwater there water was coming over the top of it and the boats were really taking a hammering.

Brilliant pics (if your boat isn`t there

As a matter of interest the weather was somewhat exceptional, we had 84 mm of rain in 14 hours. The wind was NE at the time so the fetch is only about 1/4 mile over the drying end of the harbour. By the following day ( Friday ) things had calmed down and on Saturday I went for a 10 mile walk without needing a jacket. Most of the boats survived but there was plenty of drama ashore with widespread flooding.

Looks bad to me,was there any damage to the pontoon ?? my own boat was out on a swing mooring at stromness for 5 months Nov 05-May06 , perhaps you saw her.she was stern to on the mooring.

HI all,
There was a mobo that sunk aswell on the next finger.
In kirkwall it was better than stromness we didn't have any damage, i keep my boat in kirkwall. the highest wind gust was 97 knots at the hatston pier which is out the bay a little bit more north and west.
the next day as mick said it was calm and you could go for a walk with no coat .

Not sure why the snappie did sink it mat have been holed, last winter there was another mobo that sank after being holed and a yacht got its jelcoat badly damaged.

cheers Geordie

I missed the excitement in Stromness as I was trying to get home from Kirkwall but my sources tell me both the boats which sank were afloat again on Friday and only superficial damage to the marina itself. I think both boats were simply overwhelmed by the amount of water being lifted by the wind, the waves were very steep even though they only had 1/4 mile of fetch in which to build, plus the torrential rain.
