Went down the East Swin channel into the Thames this weekend. The N E Maplin buoy was plugged in the GPS at its position in Reeds and on my old and new charts N51.37.43 E001.04.90
My GPS said I'd passed it when it was still in front of me. Did they move it? How would I find out?

On the way back I was tacking around and didn't get near enough for a fix. Blinking North Easterlies!

The other alternative might be the datum used by Reeds and the charts might not be the one programmed into the GPS......

Have you allowed for your deliberate offset so that you don't run it down? Assuming you put an offset in to start with and you can remember which side it was applied to.

I did the correctons that came with the chart last month. Now to check Imray website.

Keeps you on your toes this east coast stuff.

Thought I'd ask a question when Jim was away creating tsunamis in Greek harbours (these newlyweds are all the same) - give someone else a chance! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Problem I have with offsets is which side do you offset by and how much? If it is a buoy then it ain't gonna be in exactly that position due to wind/tide anyway ... so I tend to go for as close as possible to the exact spot and then offset my course...

and mine too but it helps, particularly in fog, if you know where it is. Can't find a chart correction for NE Maplin buoy. Not planning to go that way again this year. Odd though - don't like mysteries.

This could be part of the reason although I'm not sure.

[ QUOTE ]
To improve the safety of navigation in the Northern Approaches to the Thames Estuary, the International Maritime Organization have approved the modification and extension of the existing Sunk Precautionary Area and the establishment of three TSSs, a two-way traffic route at Long Sand Head, an area to be avoided and a recommended route at the Galloper. These changes will be implemented at 0000 UTC 1 July 2007.
I enclose draft publications which I hope will be of interest. You will note that the scheme applies to vessels over 300GT and there are few, if any, restrictions on vessels that are less than 20m in length. I have looked at the charts covering the recreational routes and believe that there is no impedance to vessels leaving Harwich via the Cork Sand yacht beacon or the rivers Crouch, Blackwater and Colne via Long Sand Head en route to Oostende. In fact, I believe that the Sunk VTS scheme will provide a better degree of certainty about where commercial ships are likely to be. In addition there are to be a number of new aids to navigation in the area which can only be useful.

I would be grateful if you could give this wide publicity on your club notice boards.

Kind Regards

I've also got the map (sorry chart) but don't know how to post it on here.

BTW
Medway Radio is also changing its call sign to Medway VTS at exactly the same time as the TSS starts (0000 UTC 1st July ~ shouldn't that be 0001 UTC to avoid confusion?).
