Straining rides

100 miles yesterday ... and my cycling companion bust his chain on a climb (must've been awesome power - not the fact that it was knackered! ) - fixed reasonably quickly by removing the offending link and replacing with a quicklink ...

Could've done without the mist, wind & drizzle ... but at least it cleared up for the last 30 miles or so ... not as quick as I'd hoped, but then we didn't dress for the weather (forecast was completely wrong!) - still, a good ride and my first century this year....

Bad back but managed an average of 17mph on my regular 13 mile route this evening for the first time. Quite pleased with that

Did a nice 30 miles tonight at 17.5 mph. Felt great and trying to make up for last weeks dismal performed!

30 at 17.5 is pretty decent too .... With that you could easily do 100 - just more slowly like we did ....
I know TTers who do it at 20mph plus ... But that's on a flat road with support to feed and water them ... Also they're on specialist bikes with the aero lids too ... At least at a slower pace you can enjoy the ride

Anyone worried they wont do the distance don't worry too much. Provided you go gently and eat and drink plenty if you can do 35 miles then 70 will not be a problem.

I cant sign up for the ride due to work commitments but wish everyone well. Hoping for a dry day with Easterly wind. Have fun.

The nice thing about Kerry completing the ride alongside me is that she couldn't give me hell about the state of the garden when it was her idea to jump on the bikes and cycle to the British Boat Show!

Near enough 50 miles today, although at a very sedate overall average speed, mainly 'cos I kept getting lost.
I think I need to lie down for a bit...

We managed to get back on the bikes this morning and cycle back from Swanwick to Basingstoke. Had to walk the bikes through Alresford due to the Watercress festival but even then we managed just over 11 mph average. Most proud of the 35.9 mph max speed.

Thats 70 miles in 24 hours. Feel like I have managed to break through a major milestone but I don't think there is any part of me thats not aching at the moment.

Well done guys, you're doing better than I.. The big mistake I've made is having a bike fit, the back has been fooked since 15 miles yesterday and had to give up. Bike going back in for some tweaks on Tuesday and if that doesn't fix things I'll be setting the bike back up as I had it before the fitting session

Hmm. The missing piece of information in my case is "How mobile is the rider after doing 50 Miles". I'm currently browsing the "Stannah Stairlifts" web site in another tab, costing it up.

Hope you manage to find a more comfortable riding position: I've just been tweaking the saddle height each time to see (very un-scientifically) if if feels better or worse.

I took to my mountain bike today, as the Echelon is being serviced ahead of the big day. So, my 16 year old Trek, got to be about twice the weight of the Echelon. Full knobbly off road tyres, boggo everything, ancient pedals with toe clips, so rode in trainers. Also wanted to see if the completely different riding position made any impact on th back trouble. Did 30 miles, felt dead slow, but a little easier up the hills due to the very low gear ratios. Anyway, cutting to the chase, averaged 14 mph, just 1 slower than the Echelon! All that expense and gear, for 1 mph? Barking! Sad to say that the back was just the same. Lower back ache in the kidney area, leading to pain in the quads after about an hour. Same as the Echelon. So it looks like Gary and me, the Crocks, will be limping round. I need to find a pain killer that works, as my heart tablet regime does not allow Ibroprufen. Heart rate really slow though, normally between 110 and 120 bpm, much lower than I would expect. Returned to 60 after about 5 mins, so not a lot wrong with the ticker. Resting rate in the low 50's.

Really good effort, both of you. Looking good for the 6th
